Here you go. 35 + Minutes - 3.41 Fouls Per Game 30 - 34 Minutes - 3.88 Fouls Per Game Under 30 Minutes - 3.88 Fouls Per Game
It has little or nothing to do with Mutombo or JVG wanting to use Deke more defensive or otherwise. This is true because JVG said so himself - he made it clear a number of times that he wants Yao to raise his minutes to 35-38 minutes per game. If Yao could give that, there is absolutely no reason to hold him back according to the coach's insinuations.
Can anyone calculate this, say since the new year, or the Wesley trade? Seems to me that Yao may be one of the top two or three most effective players on the court in the NBA right now.. Slightly puts in to perspectivd the Lebron hype as well. Little way to go before he is no 1 in this stat.
Not totally true. He is averaging about 1 minute less this season than last but is also averaging about a half a foul more per game this season - easily enough to count for the one minute difference. This is not a singular problem. This is a combination of issues from fatigue and foul trouble to rotation combinations. Keep in mind that the league is, more than any year in a while, running very small lineup combinations on the floor. There are times when Yao on the floor is a significant matchup problem for the Rockets on the defensive end of the floor. The combination of all of those things leads to Yao's MPG issues, but, frankly, I just don't see the problem. The guy is improving and he is going to have to adjust to a league that is shifting from a half court, slow down offense with big men eating up the middle to a fast, full court, up tempo offense with small guys manning the forward and center spots. It has taken them nearly half a season to adjust and we are one of the teams that most has to adjust to the rule changes and the changing style of play because of Yao's unique skillset.
We can check the stats at: http://www.nba.com/playerfile/yao_ming/game_by_game_stats.html then I copy the stats to Excel file and sort the data by minutes played each game, then we can see:
Seems that way!! (it is also totally wierd that he gets less blocks per game the higher his minutes have been - I was shocked at that!)
What's interesting about it? Yao's numbers go up when he plays more minutes, isn't that how it's suppose to work?
