I was looking forward to spending some "After game" time there.

    NBA introduces new security measures

By EDDIE PELLS, AP Sports Writer
    February 17, 2005
DENVER (AP) -- The NBA is using All-Star weekend to introduce new security guidelines for all its arenas in hopes of preventing a repeat of the brawl between players and fans in Detroit earlier this season.

Among the new guidelines announced Thursday will be a ban on alcohol sales during the fourth quarter, a 24-ounce limit on the size of alcoholic drinks and a limit of two alcoholic drinks per customer. Designated driver programs will be required at each arena.

The new security measures are mandatory for all 30 teams.

``We look at this as an opportunity to remind people that coming to an arena is an opportunity to share an experience of rooting a home team on to victory and booing the opposition, but not doing it in an anti-social way that goes against our civil society,'' NBA commissioner David Stern told The Denver Post.

Beginning with Sunday's All-Star game and continuing through the season, each team will post an ``NBA Fan Code of Conduct'' in prominent spots around their arenas and will make periodic public-address announcements reminding fans of the policy.

Language included in the code of conduct:

-- ``Players will respect and appreciate each and every fan.''

-- ``Guests will be treated in a consistent, professional and courteous manner by all arena and team personnel.''

-- ``Guests will enjoy the basketball experience free from disruptive behavior, including foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.''

Players and fans brawled in the stands and on the court at the end of a game between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons in November. One of the most violent episodes in NBA history was sparked when Indiana's Ron Artest went into the seats after being hit by a cup tossed by a spectator.

Artest was suspended by the NBA for the rest of the season, and other players drew suspensions as high as 30 games. One of the players, Jermaine O'Neal of the Pacers, is starting for the Eastern Conference. Ten players and fans were charged for fighting.

The league plans to provide guidelines on the number of security officers teams should employ, as well as their tactics and placement in the arenas. The guidelines say fans can be ejected for breaking the rules, but Stern said the league is not looking for ways to kick people out.

    Edited to show new laws^^^^^

Matt Jackson said he was goign to do his Pre and Post game show from the Old No.7 and even interviewed Scott Padgett there after the last game.

Now it looks like we wont be able to get a drink there after the 3rd QTR. :(
I guess its a Pre Game only spot now.
Well, there is always the new BUS across the street.

I recommend using a plastic flask containing your beverage of choice.

About a block SW of the arena.

The new rules really aren't that intrusive. The more interesting effect will be if more people get bounced for being obnoxious.

Precisely. Suddenly your $8 Coke becomes a nice tall glass of "Cheer Really Loud" juice.

I have been conisdering this....do some people really carry a flask around when they go to games, clubs, concerts, etc..? Seems like it would save quite a bit of money if you go out a lot. Where is the best place to buy one of these plastic ones....a liquour store?

We did it for the Rice/A&M game last weekend at MMP. Of course, we just brought in a little bottle of liquor that they sell behind the counters.

The 4th quarter is only 12 minutes (approximately 25 real minutes) long, so you'd have to be chugging your ass off to get blitzed on that alone. 1st, 2nd, halftime and 3rd is 400% longer than that and is way more than enough time to get drunk. I don't really see how removing the last 20% of alcohol sales is gonna make any difference, even if people tend to drink more in crunch time. It'll just make the end of the third into crunch time for the beer man and the effects of that will have set in just in time for everyone to see the last minute of the game and drive home.

The way I remember it...this has always been the norm at the Compaq and Toyota centers...

I always buy my last beer right before the 4th due to the stands shutting down.

Well my BIGGEST concern is whther they mean two drinks per trip to the stand or two drinks per trip to game :( ...

My smallest concern is if I ACCIDENTALLY slip up and shout

    "That was bull $hit!!"

Am I going to get tossed?

Of course people do this. People carry flasks of hooch with them to all kinds of places (not just ballgames). I would think that a metal one would set off metal detectors, but a plastic one would probably be fine.

When my dad used to live here, he would sneak booze into the baseball games in some fake binoculars that were really a flask (they're called barnoculars).

As Matt Jackson said...3rd quarter beer sales are going to SKYROCKET

And I could have sworn laws like this were already in place? I know that in the NFL ( Texans specifically) Beer sales are over at the end of the 3rd quarter. I guess not being a drinker myself...kinda made me think th is was a sportswide thing. Guess not.

If someone can't make it through the 4th quarter without alcohol, they don't need to be at the game anyway. They should be at an AA meeting.

While drunken behavior is what they want to curb most, I'm sure they were also thinking the fewer full cups of beer in the crowd to throw onto the court in crunch time, the better.

So next time Yao and Duncan throw down, you would need Roger Clemens to get that empty plastic cup anywhere near that thug, Tim Duncan. ;)
