Obviously with the trade deadline approaching soon, trades involving Taylor and Spoon are flying out left and right. Everyone wants to dump these guys contracts, basically for anyone but them. My question is: Is this smart? I'm by no means a cap expert, but I thought I remembered that even if Mo and Spoon came off the books next season, we would not be significantly under the cap to be a player in FA, and we would lose our trade exception. Getting JUST under the cap would hurt us more than help us. The solution? Don't trade them... yet. Taylor and Spoon will be hot commodities in the next two years, as Spoon comes off next and Taylor the year after. Teams are always looking to dump stars, high-priced role players to start over and rebuild. I think we could get a high caliber player by trading one of those expiring contracts, as both have heavy price tags coming off the books. The Rockets should hold on to the two, and wait until the market for them is greatest -- We're not going to be able to add pieces by outbidding people in the offseason. We'll have the MLE to use 2005, 2006, and 2007. Spoon (hopefully) traded for someone in 2006, and Taylor the same in 2007. I think 2007, if it all plays out right, would put us on top of the NBA's elite. Thoughts?
that's very true but how can you pay a player a billion dollars a year to be inactive?? cd would have to have a lot of patience to implement this strategy
Well Spoon has zero trade value and Mo has contributed nothing for his max contract. I can't imagine his value is much at all.
next year, Spoon will have value for that reason (he comes off the books). Mo is another story (although, in the right system, Mo would be a good player) ... I still don't understand why New Jersey went with 2 broke down "big" men, when they could have offered a 2nd rounder for MO (who would thrive on the Nets)
