The worst part about this election is that, ultimately, it appears no one is going to win. Gore will likely end up winning the popular vote and Bush will likely end up winning the electoral vote.

What is even worse is that it has done nothing but serve to divide those of us with differing political viewpoints. Now, we have a country divided on candidates, but, even more seriously, divided along racial and gender lines. The vast majority of minority and women voters cast their ballots for Gore while Bush got the white male vote.

    Ugh.

Jeff, I agree. However, I'm confused about what your position is. On one hand, you're saying that because of this election we're further divided racially and by gender, which I agree with, but on the other hand you say this is good for the country:

"These are the same growing pains we've seen throughout our country's history. It is no more difficult and, in some cases, just as painful. It is part of being a democracy."

    Which is it?

If you notice in that thread, I never said it was fun, just reality. There is a significant difference.

Nobody including me wants division. The other thread was a response to your assertion that this divide is bad for the country. It isn't a bad thing, just an uncomfortable and even painful thing.

It is the way we evolve and it is necessary, but that I didn't call it "growing pains" for nothing.

Jeff, I'm still confused. In this thread you said "what is even worse is that it has done nothing but serve to divide those of us with differing political viewpoints." Let me say that I agree with that.

But in the previous thread you said:

"That is what freedom is all about - the ability to express ourselves. If we are divided over a candidate, so be it. That just means we are free to choose and that is a good thing. I'd far prefer that to the alternative."

I'm still not sure whether we agree or disagree on the effect this is having on the country.

Let me clear it up -

    YES it serves to divide.
    YES it is painful.
NO it is ultimately not bad for the country though it hurts now.

Part of the problem is that I didn't really clarify that my original post in this thread was more about we BBS'ers than it was about the country as a whole.

The quote about the country being divided was really just me pointing out how deep the divide can be. I wasn't clear enough on that point so let me start the whole thread over.

"What is even worse is that it has done nothing but serve to divide those of us on this BBS with differing political viewpoints. Now, we have a country divided along racial and gender lines and a BBS divided along political lines."

The sad part, really, is that the racial and gender divide has been around forever. This election just serves as another reminder that we haven't beaten the racism and gender inequity monster yet.

I hope that is clearer. [IMG]

There was some voting trends that confused me.

Only 70% of those claiming to be homosexual voted for Gore, while Bush got 25% of the sector.

Almost 80% of Jewish votes went to Gore, even though Jews heavily support military support (and hence strength) in Israel. Under Clinton and assuredly under Gore the military will not be the force it would be under Bush.

The Catholic vote went 50% to Gore and 47% to Bush even though Gore is Pro-Choice.

Gore got 56% of the "upper class" vote to Bush's 39%.

Gore got 22% of the voters who believe that abortion should always be illegal.

25% of people who think the government should do less, voted for Gore.

    -----

I don't know why I put them here. I just thought they were interesting and hard to explain.
