I know this is getting old fast, but let's discuss a revote. Let's say that only those that voted the first time can vote the second time. And let's forget the logistics of a revote schedule including a new absentee and overseas vote (And the possibility of - I really did overseas vote the first time, but it got lost in the Turkish mail system). Lets say that Bush has a 324 vote lead. And lets say that I am one of the 325 people REALLY did mean to vote for Nader or Buchanan the first time. Knowing what I/we know now, I (and the other 324 of us) may want to change my/our original vote(s) from Nader or Buchanan to Al Gore. Gore wins!

    Fair?

To give a Dan Rather-esque type quote, "You can't put the genie back in the bottle."

Anyone who voted for Buchanan on purpose most likely would not vote for Gore. Their ideologies are almost the exact opposite.

You're absolutely right and that is one of the reasons why a revote will never take place.

Bush will end up taking the election for mainly reasons that have to do with the way we vote and the system itself. I do see a couple of things that can be done to improve the system.

    1. Amend the Constitution, scrap the E.C. and go strictly by Popular Votes.

    2. The antiquated voting methods have obvious flaws in them and its time for a serious upgrade. Other bbs members have suggested using a more interactive, multimedia computer system where you would see a referendum or individual you were voting for and would touch the screen to select the item. Other people have questioned the safety of this citing hackers as the obvious obstacle. Though this is an legitimate concern, we can't run from the benefits that this system would have to offer in situations like these: peace of mind.

No I didn't. Just tired of watching CNN, FNC and MSNBC all day with people debating a revote.

I personally think a 100% revote would be fair. The Nader voters get to reconsider yes but then the "victims of the liberal media" in the Central Time Zone of Florida get their chance to let their voice be heard too.

Putting by bias towards Gore aside, it seems like the will of the people would be better served with a revote. Gore won the popular vote (who would have thunk it?), and it appears that he would have won Florida had there not been so many screwed up ballots. Let the Palm Beachers vote again.

Wow. I'm trying not to be biased and I just don't see how it could be fair. I mean, all the Nader people could change there vote. I know some people would actually return to vote for Nader again, but if I were a Nader voter, I'd have to say I'd probably change my vote knowing what I know now. And I just don't see that that's fair. [IMG]

You know what I found funny. Is that Gore kept saying he won the popular vote, yet there is still 1 million votes in California to be counted per MSNBC.
#1 Dont you think Gore should let people know the count isnt over yet if he claims to be the popular winner
#2 what the hell is taking California so long?

The whole election is showing that we need a major overhaul of the system by 2004.

A revote would not be fair. Because there is MANY different counties that had thrown out ballots. In Duval county in Florida, it was reported on Fox that there was 22,000 thrown out. Bush won that county 60% to 40% of the counted votes. So if we revote in West Palm Beach, dont you think Duval would want a revote? Or if we manually recount West Palm Beach, dont you think we should manually recount Duval?
This whole thing is a mess.

a 100% statewide revote would be the best thing. both parties would agree that there would be no recounts of the revote.

and a professional accounting firm would be hired to handle the process, not volunteers.

would be a lot faster than court hearings.

A Revote is a mistake. You are allowing a county to know that their vote alone decides the election. If you do that you will get NO votes for Nader, Buchanan, etc... People will not vote who they originally wanted to.
Mistakes and errors happen. People need to live with it. I wonder why we are making such a big deal about this ONE county revoting, when there are OTHER counties that have more ballots thrown out. Read the news article for what I am meaning: http://www.newsday.com/ap/text/national/ap870.htm
