I dont know what took so long for our team to start clicking.. maybe our guys just needed some time to gel or the additions of Barry/Wesley really made all the difference? I know we needed more outside shooting and now that we have it I see much more improvement.. what im wondering is if we started the season with this team would we be a top 3 team and considered contender status? Our winning % is pretty strong lately and our offense is clicking.. Our defense is still near the tops in the league (even though our players havent been focusing on it as much as usual) If we started off the season as strong as now would be in the upper echelon of teams right now? Considered an elite team? and why? My reasoning is that even with our slow start we are only 4 or 5 games back of Dallas / Kings 4/5 spots. That is not that many games and if we continue our torrid pace I could see us overtaking one of them if not both. Your Opinions? J
As i said in anther thread, the 4th seed was'nt out of the realm of possibelity for us if we started the Season like the current form we have. Conversly it's pretty hard for a new team which had 70 to 80% of it's Roster Rearranged. I believe even at our best the Spurs and the Suns are above us. that leaves the Kings, Dallas and Seattle. I believe we have the right mix of players to beat the Mavs and the Sonics, but we seem to allways Struggle against the Kings. i cant see us beating the kings in a 7 Game Series!
I just looked at the Standings and you might have a solid argument. but as i said before, it's pretty unfair to expect for a team like the Rox who had Probaly had 70% of there Roster Rearranged, to comeout of the blocks firing!
If I were one of the other playoff teams right now I would rank San Antonio and Phoenix as the only two elite teams I don't want to play in the first round. After that Houston and Dallas are two teams that create matchup problems for most teams and have great veteran talent. So right now I see the Rockets as a top four team in the west. But if all teams started the season withthe current rosters and everyone healthy it would take some time to start jelling. Sacramento, the Lakers, and Minnesota (9th) have started to implode of late. Each seem too dependent on the performance of one player and are not playing team ball. I don't see Seattle and Memphis sustaining their current pace. I've been saying that for some time so maybe I'm wrong. I just don't see either as having great or deep talent.
It was frustrating watching the Rockets at the beginning of the season. Not because they were playing badly, but because they were getting so many open shots and just not hitting them. It was sad seeing how bad everyone not named Yao and McGrady were. Thankfully, once the role players started hitting their open shots, things got much better for the Rockets. Howard started hitting his shots from midrange. Padgett has been a great shooter off the bench and in the clutch. Barry has had great games with his shooting and assists. Sura has been a threat for a triple-double always getting his share of points, rebounds and assists. Wesley has always brought his defense and recently has also found his shooting touch. Deke has been pure energy off the bench. The play of the role players have been the difference from the start of the season to now.
It would be very difficult to contaon bibby, miller, webber. peja in a seven game series...it would nice but difficult i would memphis ahead of us right now because they bring it every night...we seem to slack a little, you cant afford to do that with a team like memphis
catching dallas might happen but i think the kings will gradually get better with the addition of mobley (they would have beaten the sonics if miller had been playing). lack of defense will keep them from doing anything in the playoffs but with all that shooting now, i would be amazed if we catch them in the standings...
heys guys after tonight's game against indy, a victory would put us to within 2.5 games back of the 5th seed with mavs and kings playing. but i'd much rather stay in the 6th spot and play the sonics is possible. they have that spot basically clenched.
I would rather move up in the rankings as much as possible. You never know what could happen late in the season and I want as much of a buffer as possible. J
after next 12 or 13 games, we can tell what our team and who we are. Now, a litl bit too early. If we can get 8--10 of next 13 games I will say no one even spurs and suns want to meet us in the playoff. That time we may even dream : oneday, one day.....
Yes sir! And the two teams ahead of us aren't exactly setting the world on fire of late. A couple of good weeks and suddenly we can start dreaming about homecourt! As far as us being elite: I don't think there's any team in the league that we can't beat. I wouldn't say we're elite just yet, but we're certainly headed in that direction - we're every bit as good as Dallas right now!
we do have a couple things working for us.. we have been beating the teams we should beat and have a pretty good record on the road. In the beginning we were pretty inconsistent losing to crap teams and occasionally beating good teams. J
I would say the Spurs, Suns and the sonics are above us. We are not going to beat the Sonics. They have to many players that can beat the rockets off the dribble. When you beat the kings and the suns in a back to back, that tells me that they are battle tested.
wow!!! HOuston is the city of comebacks. Astros made a marvelous comeback, and houston...... wow, simply wow
After seeing them beat Pheonix in Pheonix, i tend to agree with you. sonics just keeping suprising everyone.
