I like Bagwell but this scenario wouldn't kill me. Moving Cedeno and Bagwell would free up room for younger players like Ward and Berkman who are on the fast track to becoming stars.

Put them with some young pitching talent and guys like Hidalgo, Lugo, Melusky and Truby and, suddenly, you have a pretty talented young team.

Better to go ahead and rebuild like the Rockets did and not cling to the past.

If we trade Cendeno, and Sign Hampton, then I've got to believe Bagwell stays. I'm guessing, but I think the money is secondary.

I don't think the Stros will trade Bagwell. Drayton has said that he will resign Bagwell - no ifs, ands, or buts. So this is strictly speculation by the Boston paper's part. Even if Bagwell refused to sign a new deal I don't think he'd be going anywhere this season. The team was burned last season, twice, by the "trade them before they become a free agent" idea. The fans are on the verge of revolt already. And, even if the Astros were willing to make a deal, the fact that we've got exactly one trade option (Boston) kinda makes it hard to get a fair deal.

Steady on there Jeff. The jury is still out on how effective the Rocket's rebuilding process has been, and they are STILL rebuilding if you ask me.

The difference in baseball is that there are salary restrictions not based on caps but based on teams.

If you re-sign Bagwell and sign Hampton, how in the hell do you compete when 3 players represent as much as 75% of the team's total salary?

What if Biggio comes back and isn't healthy? What if Bagwell begins to see his skills diminish? Can the Stros really afford to have 5 more years of $40 million in salary for 3 players?

The ultimate solution is either one of two things:

    1. Drayton ups his salary level to $65 or $70 million (highly doubtful).

    2. The Stros cut down on big-time player salaries and begin working with young talent.

This is one of the big reasons baseball sucks right now.

Hampton will not sign if The Wrangler is still in the dugout.
