Since Yao is labeled the biggest disappointment of the league and Amare is the next Dream in line, I think that it's interesting to compare the stats of these two in a couple of way: Amare vs. Yao 26.1 pts vs. 18.3 8.6 boards vs. 8.5 1.6 assists vs. 0.8 1.6 blocks vs. 1.9 (all per game) If you normalize Yao's stats to 36.4 mpg: Amare vs. Yao 26.1 pts vs. 21 8.6 boards vs. 9.7 1.6 assists vs. 0.9 1.6 blocks vs. 2.2 (all per game) Lots of people are saying that Nash makes Amare a better player. Now let's compare Amare's stat when Nash is injured with Yao without TMac when Yao was forced to become the man: Amare vs. Yao 16.7 pts vs. 28.5 7.3 boards vs. 6 41.8% shooting vs. 51.5% (all per game) What does that tell you? It seems to me that Amare struggles mightily on the court without Nash. On the otherhand, Yao can still deliver in the face of double team when TMac is not able to share the scoring load for the Rockets.
i was with you until that last one. tmac takes shots from yao, nash gives shots to amare. of course yao will score more with tmac out and amare less with nash out. what was very telling was amare's #'s w/o nash (yao comparison not needed). because those more closely represent yao's #'s. the point being that with a great PG a good bigman becomes dominant. nothing against sura, but we still need a ture starting PG. i think sura would be awsome off the bench with barry, padgett, and deke. if we can last a PG like jaric, watson, or dickau this summer you will see a huge jump in yao's stats.
It tells me that many people hate Amare seriously...Amare is not the next dream..that discussion should never come up..ever...again Amare needs Nash
Amare is overrated. But you can't compare stats by "normalizing" players per minute. Because Yao doesn't play 36.4 minutes per game. Part of his trouble is he doesn't have the endurance to play that long, and he gets into foul trouble. If and when he's capable of playing normal minutes, he'll start putting up stats. Right now, he's a part-time player. He's not going to become a superstar playing 31 minutes a game.
What are Yao's stats in games played above 35 minutes? 35+ Minutes per game 21.75 ppg 10.6 rpg 1.25 apg 1.75 bpg
in all honesty the without nash v. without tmac comparison is unfair to amare. it's small n first of all (you're going off of two games for yao i believe), and secondly amare had better numbers than that last year when there was no nash at all. but the point is amare is not better than yao and i agree.
There are 2 reasons Yao can't play as many minutes as Amare. One is stamina, the other is foul trouble. The first one requires offseason training, I hope Yao will get it this summer. Now the 2nd one. Amare doesn't play that much defense, his conterparts have 56% percentage against him, so he doesn't foul that much. But Yao always play defense as hard as he can, holding his counterparts to 43% shooting, also commits a lot fouls. And Yao is oftern guards players out to 3 point line, totally out of position for rebounding. That takes out a lot of energy as well. I'm pretty sure Yao can do better on offensive end and get get more rebounds if he doesn't play defense like that. Right now the rules are in favor of offense, so Yao definitely has some disadvantage here for individual stats. Since Rockets have enough scorers but not enough defenders, Yao is sacrificing for the good of the team. Defense goes unnoticed to media and most fans, but come to playoff time I hope his emphasis on defense will pay off. Just checked 82games, Yao and Amare's Per ratings at center are almost the same,9.7 and 10. Amare gets the job done with his offense, Yao gets the job doen with his all around game. Since Amare has Matrix as PF and Nash as PG, I still believe Yao is better than Amare.
Just something to think about: on ABC's Halftime show, Amare said that before he came into the league, he only played 2 years of high school basketball.
One is the up and coming superstar, Amare the Great, according to the media. The other one is the most disappointing player of the year, Yao Ming, according to the media. I can't believe you said that they are not better than each other.
His Jr. and Snr. years probably..that doesn't mean he just started playing basketball in high school Dream on the other hand started playing in 1979 (he was drafted in 84)
Actually Amare's stat shooting percentage wise without Nash is much worse than with Nash. The difference is a whopping 16%. On the other hand, Yao +/- TMac shoots consistently over 50%. If you give Yao an extra 7-8 shots/game, he is gonna give you very sexy number. Not sure whether Amare can do that without Nash.
Exactly. I personally don't buy this "Amare sucks without Nash" talk. Nash only missed 3 games. But even if it were true, how does it change anything? The fact of the matter is those two will be playing together for a very long time. So it doesn't matter how he plays without Nash.
yao, has very bad hands,he can't catch bounce passes which nash like to throw alot.yao is not very good at catching lob passes also like amare is.I think yao would be a li l better ,but not too much better with a true point guard.
Nash missed 5 games. Suns went 0-5. That's almot half of their seasons loss so far. Amare did suck without Nash.
According to his NBA game log, he missed 3 games in the middle of January. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?playerId=592 The Suns lost the two previous games with Nash before his injury and also lost the game in which he made his return.
They lost the first one out of the five loss while Nash being injured, then 3 without him then the last one when he first come back. If I remember correctly.
Suns had a 6 game losing streak +/- Nash. Nash played in the first game. He was injured in the second game and played only 11 min in that loss. He missed 3 full games and Amare was just a totally different player (I watched all those 3 games). And the next game when Nash returned, Amare looked like world beater against TD even if they lost in the OT to a crazy Ginobili who was playing out of his mind that night. Although the sample size is small, it did offer us a glimpse of the truth: Amare's play dropped several levels when Nash was not on the court, Yao played great when he was forced to be the primary option without TMac.
