Does anyone honestly believe that if a candidate was to be completely honest about themselves and their past problems that they could win the presidency?

The American people are convinced they need part saint, part Rambo, part economic guru, part media god as a president. Who exactly fits that bill? No one!

If all candidates were put under the microscope with all their shortcomings revealed, None of the Above would win 9 times out of 10.

    outlaw,

I most certainly do not condone drink driving and I'm sorry if my post came across that way. I am in favor of much stricter drink driving controls & laws (as I have argued in this forum previously).

My point is that I disagree with the way in which this issue has been used as an election tool and may well cost him the presidency.

I should have phrased my opening line "In the scheme of things, who cares about a drink driving conviction."

Because the man is about to take over the most stressful job in the world. 14 years is impressive but hardly a world record for sobreity. Alcoholics fall off the wagon all the time no matter how long they were on it.

And you're right, Bush is no Yeltsin. Boris was at least qualified to take the job.

    Jeff,

The only reason this bothers me is because he lied about being arrested while at the same time campaigning on bringing character back to the White House.

Like I've stated, I'm happy that Bush has appeared to defeat his vices. I just think if he's going to argue about character, he needs his to be a little better.

I'm tempted to point out on Bush's behalf that Clinton had committed perjury, while Bush only lied to a reporter. Traj beat me to it for one; but for another, I don't like Bush. I'm voting for him -- in exchange for my wife's vote on the arena.

However, I've noticed a strange phenomenon that takes hold in party politics as well as religion and a number of other spheres. That is blind partisanship. I feel the tug myself. I decided some time ago that I'd vote for Bush in return for an extra arena vote. Ever since, I've always felt a need to defend him: like pointing out that Clinton perjured himself while Bush only lied. I don't feel a similar duty towards Gore. I don't like that. I'm not a Republican, I don't like Bush, and the only silver lining I see to a Bush presidency is that he won't be governor of Texas.

Similarly, jamcracker seems to me to be operating under this same partisanship. You already don't like Bush, and here's another reason to not like him: he used to be a drunkard and drove drunk probably numerous times (I'd point out as an aside that it wasn't demonized in the 70s the way it is now, not that that's any excuse). I agree that it is a reason to not like him, even though he's sobered since then (more on that below). But why compare to Clinton? Because you want to push the double-standard into the other camp and say they didn't treat my man honestly. This has always been the position of Clinton supporters in regards to his perjury. They put the emphasis on "lying to the American people," while that was never even the problem. The problem was lying on the stand to unfairly affect the outcome of a trial. If Bush had perjured himself, then we could compare.

As for Davo's dismissal of airing all one's dirty secrets, I think it is unfortunate that he did not. I think Bush was in a great position to do something really good by talking about his addiction to alcohol and his drug-use, because he is a man who went far down that road, but came back again, cleaned up his act and now leads a semi-respectable existence. Of course he can't really do that and win the election at the same time. However, I am glad that this information about drunk-driving is out before the election. I hope every dirty secret about all the candidates comes out before tomorrow (already?) so that we can make an informed decision on president, instead of finding out after the election that he has harrassed a bunch of women and swindled people in real estate. As for private affairs: if you want to be my president, and you want to win my vote (instead of it being bartered), then you have no private affairs.
