Why do I always get stuck behind one of these people at the checkout line in any retail establishment??? I mean this isnt 1987 for the love of all that is holy......... Get with the times... get a debit card and get out of my way...... Yes Im in a hurry.
the best argument for this was people who lived paycheck to paycheck could float a few checks before payday. Checks are processed so quickly now that you can't really get away with that, so yeah, get a check card and burn the checks.
Checks now pass nearly instantly, since the new process has begun. Debit cards are good....that's what I use 95% of the time, the other 5% is cash.
You can still go the night before your paycheck goes in and you are good to go. But with a debit card, it always pending in my account for about 24 hrs.
Be careful with your check cards. Visa or whoever guarantees them against theft, but remember this...if all of your money is drained you have to fight for YOUR money. If you use a credit card and pay it off every month, if it is stolen the credit card company fight for their money...not you fighting for your money.
I still go to Wal-Mart and float checks, not that I have to. I can write a check there and it will go through 4 days later.
Yep, happened to me. Took me almost 2 months to get Visa and the bank to square everything. Unbelievable pain in the arse.
This is wrong. They passed a law a couple of months ago, and checks are INSTANT now, so if you do not have money, do not write that check. DD
I have no clue why anyone uses a debit card. I use a Mastercard credit card that pays me 5% on groceries, gas, and drug stores, 1% on everything else. Both Citi bank and Chase have a card like this with no annual fee. Think about it: If you charge $1,000/month you would receive between $120-$500/year just to make purchases. Also, rather than taking money out of your account instantaneously, you have 30 additional days of interest. Even at 1.5%-2% interest rates, that's still money you accumulate in your account while the card company gives you an interest free loan. Charging your credit card allows you to itemize all of your expenses helping you organize your finances. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to contest charges that you did not make rather than having it "withdrawn" from your account and fighting your bank later to reinstate the cash. Obviously, this strategy is maximized assuming you pay off your monthly balance. Debit cards are for suckers.
Why is it wrong? I have not had one check go right on through. I know about the law but I check my account online everyday and I am still waiting for the first check to go through instantly.
Which law is this? I'm vaguely familiar with the Check 21 law that went into effect in October of last year. But that applies to banks and doesn't seem to make electronic processing mandatory. I'm not familiar with anything that applies to retail outlets.
No it doesn't, one of my checks still hasn't went through and the reason I know this is I wrote a check to Kroger the same day that went through so there you go, it doesn't go through instantly at Wal-Mart at least.
Are we sure that all checks are really instant??? I still make some large buys and sometimes pay by checks and have yet to see any pending or charge to my account with in a few days...
Oh yeah and the way I know if a check or charge went through is because my bank has real-time transactions online which is great.
Yes that sounds better but even though it is possible for some reason Wal-Mart does let or make them go through that soon.
Believe it or not, some things in life still require a paper check. Like my rent. And the rent to my practice space. Groceries or other retail stores, on the other hand. Yeah, just whip out some plastic.
