    From the Seattle Times:

Gorton's wild ride: Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., may think twice before accepting rides from reporters after a raucous cruise with an icon of American journalism. The scene was a Bellingham school where several police organizations were endorsing Gorton on Monday.

The senior senator was outlining his campaign message as Washington Post writer David Broder took notes on his steering wheel as he drove. Broder didn't notice that a Gorton staffer stopped dead in front of him.

With police looking on and Gorton yelling "stop!" Broder plowed into the young staffer's borrowed station wagon, then reversed into the 1988 Nissan Sentra driven by a stunned Associated Press reporter, David Ammons.

Broder later apologized. Gorton spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman urged the staffer to turn the other cheek: "You can't sue David Broder."

Ammons said the damage was minimal, and he forgives the reporter he calls his idol. The moral of the story, according to Ammons: "We should have made Slade drive."
