So I was just sitting here googling some things, and I wondered....does anyone still actually use a search engine besides google? In a fairly short amount of time, it seems that Google has taken over and become the standard search engine used by nearly everyone. I imagine there are still some people that use Yahoo out of habit, but I doubt it's very many. Is there really any reason to use something like Lycos, Altavista, etc..?

Hell, we've even got a Google server in our datacenter, which we use for intranet search where I work.

If you don't use google.....why not?

Never really thought about it till you mentioned it...but, nope.

I can't even remember what I used to use before. Yahoo, I guess.

I like Yahoo personally. Just cuz it's old school and it's owned by a Chinese guy with better results for Chinese searches. I also google and yahoo just because they give different searches and i like the variety.

I wonder why google has become the defacto search engine. I mean it isn't the first one to come out. There were a bunch out before it. weird...

Yeah i have wondered the same thing. For quite a while yahoo was the same way but at some time it shifted to google. Though it seems that google produces the best results and seems to have the best interface.

How do you judge the "best results" from a search?

i can't ever remember using something other than google. and i don't know how i ever lived without it (like the yellow line in football). especially for simple crap. wanna know the lyrics to a song real quick, who wrote a book, who was in what movie. stuff like that is just so easy to find. now i'm sure other engines can handle that as well (basically i'm just praising the internet) but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. hell, google is synonymous with searching now. no one says "i yahoo'd it."

Google's cache function is awesome. I pretty much use it exclusively, but sometimes will use icerocket for the little picture of the page next to the search results.

I used dogpile before google and altvista before that.

Google was cool becuase the home page is so clean and not cluttered with a bunch of stuff. I think that helped it's popularity also.

    I also like to Froogle.

Someone at work just showed me A9.com, Amazon's search engine. Go to the Yellow pages and search for a restaurant by zip code. You can then virtually walk down the street looking at the restaurants.

They have only mapped a few cities. I work at 90401, and it works.

Why is the cache function so useful? Why not just click on the actual link? Sometimes the cached page is outdated...
