Yao's stats in recent 4 games vs. season average: Minutes: 36, season: 31.4 Increase 15% points: 21.3 season: 18.3 Increase: 16.4% rebounds: 9.3 season: 8.4 Increase: 10.7% shooting percentage: 63.5% season:52.7% Increase: 10.8% FT percentage: 82.6% season:78.2% Increase: 4.4% Blocks: 2.3 season: 1.9 Increase: 21% Assists: 0.3 season: 0.7 Decrease: 57.1% TO: 2.8 season: 2.9 Decrease: 3.4% shot attempts: 13 season: 12.3 Increase: 5.7% FT attemps: 5.8 season:6.8 Decrease: 14.7% So Yao is playing better than season average across the board except assists. The thing I want to mention is: Combine Yao's shot attempts and free throw shooting attempts, roughly count 2 FT attempts as one shot attempt, his number of shots is virtually unchanged despite playing 15% more minutes and being a lot effecient scoring wise. I believe Yao deserves more shots than 13 attempts in 36 minutes, especially when he is shooting like that and I believe it will be better for both Yao and Rockets to do that.
He will take mores shots when he is ready to take more shots. Yao could have had many more shots last night if he would have, after recieving an entry pass while a few feet from the basket, been more determined to score over a weak double team by a 6ft Jamar Nelson. He got the ball plenty last night but he just passed it back out too much, imo.
Exactly! Yao, and only Yao, dicates how many shot attempts he gets. When he establishes good post position, he almost always gets a touch. Whether he takes a shot or dishes back out is up to him.
Maybe we're watching different games then. Go back and watch a tape of an old Olajuwon game. Dude established great position in the post. He sealed his man deep on the left block and then demanded the ball. He didn't get it every time, of course, but a high percentage of the time when he did that the ball would swing his way. If Yao was able to establish deep position, seal his man, and put himself in a position to receive the ball close to the basket, he'd get more touches. He doesn't always do this.
Yao will get more shots. I like the way he is getting better at fighting for position down low. If my eyes weren't mistaken, I did see Yao spin off the defender to get a better position down low. The guards are doing much better when Yao has one on one but that double team is still hampering his offense. Yao should watch some old game tapes of Olajuwon handling the double teams.
