It looks like the starting five for both conferences in the All Star game is a lock..

    EAST WEST
    James (Cle.) G McGrady (Hou.)
    Iverson (Phi.) G Bryant (LAL)
    Carter (N.J.) F Garnett (Min.)
    Hill (Orl.) F Duncan (S.A.)
    O'Neal (Mia.) Yao (Hou.)

however, im curious who will be the reserves.. anyone know how the reserves are chosen?

    my estimate.

East Guards (have alot of good guards)

    JKidd / DWade / MRedd

    East Forwards (selection is weak)

    JOneil / RWallace / AJamison

    East Center

    Ben Wallace / Big Z

The east would field a more competitive team if LJames / BWallace would list as Forwards and VC as a guard.

then my starting 5 would have been. (popularity)

    AI / VCarter
    LJames / BWallace
    Shaq

    West Guards

    RAllen / SNash / BDavis?

    West Forwards

    Dirk / SMarion / Peja

    West C

    BMiller / Amare

I tried to find some balance with too many players that are redundant too each other.

what do you think? I didnt think I need Amare with KG / Duncan and Smarion is much more versatile but too talented to leave off.

I'd be surprised if Kidd made the All-Star team over Francis or Arenas. Kidd just hasn't played enough games this season.

Same with B. Davis. I'd have to think that either Parker or Ginobli make the team over Davis, who's only played 17 games this year.

Are basketball fans that r****ded in that they still vote for Vince Carter and Grant Hill? This isn't 1999.

Granted it's not a deep spot int he East and Hill's having a nice "comeback" season, but still.

The all-star voting really should switch to just straight voting for players, and maybe list them as C, C/F, F, F/G, G. Start the top 5 in votes if you can, and only if need be start someone with lower votes to fill all positions.

    But, topic at hand:
East Starters: Shaq, Carter, Hill, James, Iverson
    East Reserves:
G: Wade, Francis, Rip, (G Arenas or M Redd)
    F: J O'Neal, R Jefferson*, Antwan Jamison
    C: B Wallace

West Starters: Yao, Duncan, KG, McGrady, Kobe
    West Reserves:
    G: Nash, Allen, Parker
    F: Stoudamire, Nowitzki, R Lewis
    C: Miller

    * - injured, alternate may be choosen to replace

ummm.. I was wondering who people would choose as reserves.

Just because you came in 3rd/4th in voting doesnt guarantee you a spot.

If Suns finish w/ Best record in West (by All Star break cut off)

do we see an influx of Suns?

    SNash / SMarion / Amare?

2 reserves each for G and F, 1 reserve for C, and 2 more reserve spots regardless of position.

Coaches vote for reserves for their conference, but may not vote for their own players.

Typically, the top players of the top teams are choosen. Only extraordinary players from sub-500 teams get choosen. For example, Okafor very likely will not be selected by the coaches. This will also kill players such as Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, Stephon Marbury, and Elton Brand.

Conference leading teams such as SA and Miami are almost always assured of no less than two representatives.

I think the All Star voting is becoming too much of a popularity contest. I understand that it is about who the fans want to see, but there is no way Vince Carter should be starting again and again year after year.

Sure, the guy has some nasty dunks. But the all star game should be more than just that, it should be the top 5 in their positions. Vince played like 8 games before the break last year and was still voted in, the same thing happened this year as well.
    The real all stars:

    West
    Yao Ming
    Tim Duncan
    Kevin Garnett
    Tracy McGrady
Steve Nash (but I guess Kobe will do)

    Reserves: Dirk, Amare, Allen, Marion

    East
    Shaq
JO (not really, but is the only real PF out there)
Grant Hill (his comeback is amazing)
    Lebron James
    Allen Iverson

Reserves: Ben Wallace, Wade, Francis, Carter, Pierce

If the All Star voting would end today, the East would have Carter or Hill at PF.

so processing what EM just stated.

    East Guards

    DWade / SFrancis

    East Forwards / Center

    JOneil / RWallace / BWallace

    2 Regardless of position

    PPierce / ?!?

*already have the Wallace brothers and I wonder if they will try to limit how many players come from the same team.

    West Guards

    SNash / RAllen

    West Forwards / Center

    Dirk / SMarion / BMiller

    2 Regardless of position

    RLewis / Peja

*already have 2 suns (Nash/Marion) dont want to make it 3 although Amare deserves to make it. Plus we needed some more outside shooting.

    - looking at the list of players the East is really guard heavy.. so I dont see why MoT wouldnt do well in the East.

Stoudemire would make it over Marion for the Suns.

    LARRY HUGHES

He's hurt but I don't think there was any way he was making the team this year although I feel he definitely deserves to be. The Wizards are playing much better this year and I think he is the main reason. On TNT or ESPN shootaround they were crediting Jamison, but I really think it's Hughes that is the biggest reason for the team's turnaround. The guy is having an amazing year and people are not taking notice.

    21/6/5/3

leading the league in steals and shooting a respectable 44%.

I agree.. LHughes has been having a tremendous year and his team is winning but no one is noticing.

    the big three for Washington.

LHughes / GArenas / AJamison (all former W's) all seem to be having breakout years and deserve some recognition.

But the East is already so guard heavy its hard to distinguish them from the pack.

reserves is going be choose by the coachs who will coach the all star game.

I think the reserves will be:
    West:
    G: Ray Allen, Nash, Ginobili
    F: Amare, Nowitzki, Marion.
    C: Brad Miller

    East:
    G: Wade, Francis, Kidd
    F: Jamison, Jermaine O’Neal, Okafor
    C: Ben Wallace

I think all star reserves are voted by the conference coaches, instead of by the coach who will coach the game. Injury replacement are decided by David Stern alone.
