I met: Charles Barkley (i have his autograph and I shoke his hand, when he came to mexico city for a game vs mavs) Sleepy Floyd ( I have his autograph) And other
well this was about 5 years ago, when he wasnt that famous. i was into the underground rap/hip hop scene back then, so i went to a concert of his when he came to houston. after the concert i went backstage to meet him, as he was by himself to say i really liked his lyrics. he was really appreciative and nice. he then asked is there anywhere i can recommend to get some food. i said i know some places that are open at that time. so him and two of his buddies got in my car and we drove to a middle eastern restaraunt that is open late. later we went to a club. it was kinda funny how none of the girls would talk to him. his friends kept going up to the girls saying this guy is going to be very famous soon, but there were no takers. so i dropped them off at the doubletree and then asked them about their plans for tommorrow. they said they had to leave for nyc, and i offered them a ride to the airport. so i dropped them at the airport. in my car, i played mostly tupac, but they also wanted to hear what was playing on the local radio stations. eminem is a very nice guy and very open to his fans( or at least back then). he gave me his cell phone number and also his agents number in case i needed to contact them again. i said you are always welcome back in houston, anytime you come back. i got some pictures, and they are really funny. since then i have seen eminem a few times mostly when i travel to nyc. he still knows my name, however famous he is. all in all, he is just a normal person who likes to have fun and is very passionate about his work. the funny thing is i really dont like his music all that much these days or the rap/hip hop genre in general. i'm more into the emo, indie rock scene. i guess we all grow up.
you met Kinky Friedman? I bow in honor.....I think Buck has all of you beat I met Willie backstage once, as a guest of Mickey Raphael's. I was speechless. Other than that, the closest I've ever been to starstruck was Magic Johnson.
You got a pretty good list though. And you reminded me I left off the SNL cast (and John McCain's daughter), whom I met a couple months back at the taping. David Cross was cool I guess. His show was awesome. It was at Laff Stop and it was only a few months after 9/11. He lit into the crowd early for giving Bush a pass and they booed him. He was waiting for that kind of reaction in Houston (he didn't even want to go to Houston according to his then-girlfriend. She was why I was there. She'd insisted on me coming around to show him Houston didn't suck.) and he got it. He ditched his act and just told the crowd how stupid they were for the next hour. After, we met, I told him I was there to show him around town and he appreciated that. I took him and his opener (don't remember the name but the guy was cool -- only joke I remember was, "I'll tell you one thing. I'm not joining the Marines. I saw this commercial -- if you join the Marines you gotta fight a fire monster!") to Rudyards and then to no tsu oH. Every time we were in the car they loudly and sarcastically sang "Proutabeanamericuncusaleastahknowahmfray." They were so pissed off about being in Houston it was incredible, but they were pretty cool to me and mine. They knew we were as embarassed to be from Bush country as DCross was to be from ATL. How's the D&D these days, by the by? I guess it took me years to get banned from it. David Cross woulda done it in five minutes flat. He's way cooler than me like that. I actually enjoyed the dialogue and tried to stick around.
In the summer of 1973, I worked for the Houston Oilers at their training camp in Kerrville. I met them all. Sid Gillman Bill Peterson Dante Pastorini Lynn Dickey Ken Burrough Elvin Bethea John Matuszak Gregg Bingham Fred Willis I met Jerry LeVias over the phone. He would call Gillman every so often and ask to be re-acquired by Houston from San Diego.
Hmm, the only person I can think of is Bob Ley. His daughter went to private school with my sister. I met him at their graduation. This was after Rudy T was let go and we were deep into the search for a coach. I remember him telling me then it was going to be Jeff Van Gundy.
D&D is mostly pitiful as has been the norm lately. I'm still hooked for the few kernels of good debate and information that happen from time to time. I can't believe you got banned. When you are banned can you read but not post? Or are you not allowed to even enter the board? I'm glad David Cross was cool to you, but it sounds he like was guilty of having made up his mind about Houston before he got there. That is ashame, but I think a lot of people do it. When I meet them I try to inform them to think Jim Hightower and not George Bush when they think of Texas politics. I let them know that George W is just playing at being a Texan, and having been born in New England, going to one of the top New England prep schools and then to Yale, is the real Bush. Then I stress Jim Hightower some more. Thanks for filling me in. And whenever your sentence is up apply for an appeal and get back into D&D. The board could use you.
I met Roger Staubach at a business function, I apparently also shook hands with Artis Gilmore when he played for the Colonels, but I was young. That's it.
FB: It'd probably be a perfect scene for me if I could lurk the D&D and not post in it. Or, at least, if I could only post in it after passing a breathalizer. But that's not the case. I'm banned from it now and I can't see it at all. Whatever. It's probably for the best. I miss it, as it's the only place I actually talk politics, but whatever. It's probably for the best. David had a natural disposition against Houston, yes, but he set it aside to do his act. When people booed him for dissing Bush he lost it and he was right to do that. He knows the difference, certainly from hanging out, between my Houston and your Houston and the rest of Houston. The guys who showed up looking for a funny man who wouldn't dare criticize the evil ****er who runs the country nowadays were disappointed, yeah. Not me. I freaking loved it. And David had a great time hanging out with the rest of us. He knows there are enlightened types in Houston, but he's right to hate on the rest of the town. It's deserved.
Sports -- most of the 2001-02 Orlando Magic (Darrell Armstrong, Mike Miller, Bo Outlaw, etc...essentially all but McGrady and Hill) Other -- if you can name them in the field of meteorology, I've probably met them. That includes the director (Max Mayfield) and staff of the Natl. Hurricane Center, directors of some of the better-known private groups (Joel Myers, Accuweather) and public agencies (Bill Proenza, director NWS-Southern Region), and numerous television personalities. The list goes on and on. Outside of that...well, not much of anyone. I've known people who are close friends with famous people, but I've not met any of those people myself.
OK, I understand the passion and zeal against the president, and support him being fired up by people who can't handle ciriticism of the President. I'm glad he didn't make the kind of generalizations about Houston and Texas or that you cured him of that afterwards. I'm sure you were a great ambassador. It is ashame that the admins can't judge banning from the dnd board on a case by case basis. I understand why they can't. But sometimes posters have a style that is on that edge, and even when they cross it, it doesn't have the same significance or personal venom that it does when others cross it. I'm with you that I almost never talk politics outside of the message board, and wouldn't have an outlet for that if it wasn't available.
My buddy and I went to Minute Maid Park to watch the College Fall Classic a couple of years ago. When I went to use the urinal I realized I was standing next to Doug Drabek. Kind of a weird situation. You really don't want to introduce yourself and shake their hand while you are in that position.
Hear that Houstonians! You are unworthy... Batman, you MUST be drunk NOW. Take your skinny, drunk, theatrial hiney back to New Mexico or Pittsburgh or Chapel Hill. That's pretty unbelievable.
I met Manute Bol at Foxwoods Resort Casino, we played BlackJack at the same table for like 3 hours. Freaken guy is addicted to GAMBLING. he probably cashed in like 3-4K before walking away wallet-lite. I met ROSIE O'Donnel on the streets of Boston(she was walking along QUNICY MARKET, doing nothing but shaking hands with people). I couldnt believe how SHORT she was, considering how big&tall people look on TV. She couldnt be more than 5'2, minus the shoes...shes probably like 5'0. I met senator JOHN KERRY in Burger King on the MASSACHUSETTS turnpike. Freaken guy was so tall and lanky. A 6'5 Senator. Also met Antoine Walker at Foxwoods Casino in CT. Sat and played blackjack at the same table with him. The guy won like 2,000, gave $500 tip to the waitress, gave the other 1500 to the dealer. I'm sitting there down 1,000 , thinking dam you rich M8ther****er, you giving away money left&right, the least you can do is give me $30 for gas money so I can make it home alive. Nice Guy though. Told me about Him and ZEKE almost getting into it inside the locker room at the ALLSTAR game in Altlanta, I guess ZEKE only played him and Pierce for 5 minutes the whole entire game. Hmm...Met a ton of CELEBs hanging out in Boston shooting the bricks.
Carl Lewis Kenny Smith Kenny Thomas Rudy T. Scott Padgett Saw Badman at UH but was too scared to approach him. Not shure who the most famous from that list is.
