[overused cliche]Well, even a broken clock is right twice a day [/overused cliche] I just have a problem with all these guys who judge a player by how fast he runs the 40 or what his high jump is. You know, all that draft combine stuff. I just think it's a bunch of hooey. Different sport, but remember when we drafted Robert Horry and everyone thought we should have taken Harold "Baby Jordon" Minor instead?
I think that was one of the only draft parties they had where they had it at the summit at that time and i remember everyone and their mother booooing uncontrolably when we took Horry. How things changed over the next few years.
while there's always more to it than just the combine numbers, if there's any sport where they should be given a great deal of importance when determining who you draft, it's football. i mean you find the physical freaks and more often than not you find the future probowlers. given that judging the mental side of things is next to impossible, it makes it all the more reasonable to look at height, weight, and 40 time for projections. this of course doesn't include qb's.
If the Niners can't trade down, I think they should go with Derrick Johnson or one of the premier DL in the draft. None of these qb prospects seem like a can't miss to me and sf has other holes to fill, so might as well go with a more proven playmaker than a potential bust. And save that cap space for a real franchise player. Course I don't mind them nabbing a qb as that pushes down more talent to Houston and Dallas, both of whom aren't going to be picking qbs anyway(for better and worse). As far as Kiper, meh, he's alrite and interesting to listen to at times, but he is one smug ass b****.
There is no way a LB goes #1. When was the last time one went in the top ten actually? Has to be at least 5 years. I think DJ is awesome, but LB is not a premium position.
Yeah, this is true, but why? A LB(Especially one like DJ/Arrington) can anchor a defense. Maybe not as effectively as a shut-down corner or a pass-rush DT, but a LB with Johnson's size and speed will make plays all over the field.
I know it's not likely to happen, but that's what I think they should do. Arrington is probably the last lb to be taken in the top 10, but vilma would have been had it not been for the awesome depth of talent in last year's class. When you have a top pick, you have to go with an impact player with as low bust potential as possible. The qbs, cbs, ol, wr this year, all meh. The rbs are pretty good, but don't make a lot of sense for the niners(and there are good options available as fas as well). So DL or DJ(in that order, really) is where I would go at the moment if I were them, if there is no way to trade down. We'll see what goes down at the combines I guess.
No way he's number one...Matt would have been...I would take Cedric, but I'm not SF...They really need everything...
As a Niners fan, I am praying that they don't select a QB. I don't think it'll fix anything. Donahue said he'd stick with the number 1 pick, but with a new GM coming soon, I hope they trade down. Shore up the offensive and defensive lines, maybe fix up the secondary. If they stick with the number one pick, or trade down but are still high enough, I wanna see em pick Antrel Rolle. Put him at #2 corner, with Shawntae Spencer at nickel, and move Mike Rumph to FS. Fixes two positions with one pick.
