I also watch for the entertainment value. Like when Charles and Kenny started reading out vote totals for the All-Star game. "How can 67,000 people think (whoever they were talking about) is the best center in the West?!? Maybe 6 or 7, but 67,000?!?" Though that montage of Swift dunking repeatedly over Yao at the end of the broadcast was painful.
When Kenny and Charles were talking about playing against your former team, Kenny mentioned that when he played against Sac, he was going to be 'politically correct'. But a teammate of his told him not to and fired him up emotionally to play hard against his old team. That former teammate of Kenny was:
This was mentioned already by a poster, but the Kenny-Charles-EJ postgame from the Kings-Cavs is on right now on NBATV.
I love Charles and Kenny, but they just won't give the Rockets any credits, so I never took their comments too seriously.
It's the same problem as I posted in another thread about Kerr--these guys are trying to entertain us (and often failing). They obviously don't study the game or follow it closely. Why else would Steve Kerr not know that the Rockets have been pushing the ball a lot more recently? Why else would Barkley not know that Stoudemire was listed as a F? It's unprofessional, and although Barkley is at least funny, it's a problem in general with sports on TV (check out the response to the football commentator ratings from Dr. Z, SI ). Freaking Stephen A. Smith. Stop yelling.
I want more Walton..at least we know he is Yao lover and won't hate too bad. Plus I think he's the best in the business!
Kenny is right though. I classify a player more a long the lines of a backcourt or a frontcourt player too. Positions in basketball are blurred. I believe Michael Jordan could have played center back in his days and outplayed almost every single center in the league except for a handful like David Robinson, Ewing, and of course Hakeem. The center position should not be isolated off on the all-star ballot.
yeah, charles should be entertainment only, and not taken seriously at all. i remember when t-mac went off for his 13 in :35, and Barkley was more mad at San Antonio for losing, than just giving t-mac his props. he does nothing but ride san antonio's jock, and scream "ginobilli" 35 times a show.
I like nba fastbreak, anthony and legler are fun together, though at times stephen a smith can be very very annoying and over-opinionated. with that said, I also like inside the nba, even though I can't stand when kenny and charles talk bad about the rockets, at times kenny makes good points and those two are pretty funny none the less (ernie is great as well).
You dun' lost your marbles dude! There is no way Jordan, a 6'6 SG, could have played center ESPECIALLY back in his day. You mentioned three of the best, but there were alot of good centers in 'Dream's' time. But, then again, you say Mihm is a good center so I shouldn't be surprised you posted that.
What does outplay mean? Every position on the court has advantages / disadvantages over the other. Michael likely could have scored at will, but so would a center, assuming he can start on the block or near. In general, positions can be unviersal, but on a more detailed level, there are unique aspects of both, especially when talking about the stars of the game. There's a big difference between what Shaq/B. Wallace (C) do and Garnett/Elton Brand (PF) do and what McGrady (SF) does and what Ray Allen (SG) does and what Nash/Bibby do (PG). My personal opinion, taking it back to the Rockets a bit, is that Yao is just a little bit too tall and a little bit too unathletic to take advantage of the fact that there are really no dominant centers in the league besides Shaq. Players like Dirk are amazing hybrids, but there seems to be a real opportunity for tall, decently athletic players with traditionally solid center skills, instead of the Pau Gasols, Darko, Tskitskivilli type 7 footers we're currently seeing. Perhaps, maintaining a PG/SG/SF/F/C all-star system will be one way to highlight this fact.
When did I ever say Mihm is a good center? I said he was a serviceable center. Concerning Jordan playing center, he could played all 5 positions with decent proficiency. He was the best SG, but I have no doubts he would held his own at the center position. Besides Hakeem, Ewing, and Robinson, I can't think of another center who would just outplay MJ if MJ was at the 5. You put MJ at center today, and the dude outplays everyone at the 5 except Shaq. Positions in basketball are not well-defined like in baseball.
Dude, the Rockets are a slightly better than .500 team. If we were 1-3 in the Western Conference, Smith and Barkley would say better things. They are honest in their answers and you can tell they aren't making their points all dramatic like 'Steven A Smith'.
The problem in basketball is that position is defined basically on the defensive end - who do you defend? On offense, there's no set role for a given position. Some centers never post up, but hang out on the perimeter, like Perkins. Some point guards are just designated shooters who don't have much ball-handling duties, like Matt Maloney or Ron Harper with the Bulls. The Bulls would have had a hard time using Jordan at "center" if the wanted to. If they were playing the Rockets, Vernon would have still been assigned to check MJ, even if the Bulls came out without a traditional center and called MJ a C (3 guards, basically). There's no way they would have designated Hakeem to try and defend Jordan on the perimeter. On defense, I suppose the Bulls could have had Jordan defense opposing centers, try to deny post position etc. But at 6'6", 198 he would have been posted up and shot over all day long. He would have been a liability on defense, not a strength. Which is why guys like Luc Longley and Bill Cartwright got playing time.
Charles and Kenny are former Rockets, and don't want to appear to relate with our sub championship condition. .......I guess.........
the TNT show is pure friggin' gold and so far above every other studio show it isn't funny. the chemistry and humor is just great. kenny was hilarious "announcing" the replay. "good defense, stay in front of him, stay in front of him" (dunk happens) "ooohhhh, stay..in..front..of..him." then they went off on don nelson taking a few weeks off for rotator cuff surgery. "what? is he a major league pitcher on the side?" "is he dirk nowitzki?" "he wanna take warmup shots in practice?" then they go on about lebron not really being 20. talking about pitching on a NY little league team. kenny says he wears 23 b/c that's his age "he's telling us without telling us." and kenny was also doing an avery johnson impression that wasn't that good but was funny nonetheless. i missed the all-star discussion but i thought the guys were in rare form last night. i didn't realize they replay it on nbatv. i need to start watching that also. and they also had my favorite game ever. "Who he play for?" where they asked barkley where random scrubs played in the nba.
so then why read and post in a thread titled "Charles and Kenny Rockets recap" i like them all because you can tell by the comments who really keeps up with all the games and does their research. i really like hearing doug collins comments as well as hubie browns.
Yeah they are by far the best halftime/pregame/postgame basketball show on any network (even though they do hate on the Rockets). Very funny except for whenever Magic comes on (he just doenst look like he fits in with them). They are alot better that the ABC or ESPN crew.
