    other guys to consider:

J.R. Rider.....the East Bay Funk Dunk....between the legs from the base line.........sick

Larry Nace- before my time......but I've heard stories.

hey, I know it might be a bit early for the kid, but what about Lebron James? I know he has yet to enter the Dunk Contest, but he IS always on Sportscents. Thoughts?

I'm personally a big Nique fan. You don't get called "the Human Highlight Reel" for no good reason. But Dr. J started it all.

Vince....that dunk he did where he put his arm through the hoop and was hanging there on his elbow was flat out nasty....I remember seeing the other all-stars on the floor with their jaws dropped.....priceless

Larry Nance was awesome. I remember wathcing him as a kid, but you know it was strange, IIRC, he stopped dunking about halfway through his career, he would just literally get up above the rim and then sort of drop the ball downward throught the hoop; I guess he was just playing it safe because of injuries or something.

    Vince, hands down.

Nobody combines power and style so perfectly in one dunk like he does.

    Harold Minder?!?

The guy that WE ALL wanted to draft. except for me of course. I knew Bob Horry was a stud.

He won the weakest slamdunk contest.

He won with some scrub looking behind the back scoop.
I was upset after watching that.

Regardless of how good Vince was for 2 years, I still say it is Dominique hands down. I want to say maybe Vince has more power in his dunks but Nique was even more explosive as a jumper.

dang so he was even more badass than i thought. of course, like i said, his dunks just aren't as pretty. it's almost like the degree of difficulty is so high that he's trying to squeeze so much in it just flies in front of you. and off the backboard he barely got it in the rim. maybe it's vince's extra height but his dunks are just so good-looking.

as far as nique vs vince, not that i saw nique in his prime but from highlights he dunks way harder than vince. vince doesn't necessarily dunk that hard. there's force there but he doesn't tear down the rim or anything. again, it's just so smooth.

and i just watched a top 10 plays of 2000 i d/l off of kazaa a few years ago. just friggin' amazing. the alley oop against the clippers where he reaches way back for it is just incredible.

Jordan. Doesn't matter if his dunks are better or not. The judges would give it to him! :p

    You're forgetting David Thompson.

Here's a little blurb about the original slam dunk contest at the ABA All-Star game in '76:

Rumors in McNichols Sports Arena were that Thompson would attempt his fabled "cradle the baby" dunk, in which he cradles the ball in the crook of his left elbow, goes high over the rim and punches the ball smartly through with his right fist.

First runner-up Thompson was a little sorry he hadn't tried the "baby cradle." "Maybe I should have," he said, "but there's a 50-50 chance I might have missed it. And besides, it's dangerous."

In "Loose Balls", Terry Pluto's excellent book about the ABA, there's a whole chapter dedicated to that slam dunk contest. Several players mention that the best dunk of the night was when Thompson did the "cradle the baby" dunk in warmups.

It would be between Nique, Kemp and Jordan in their primes and the winner is...........MJ. The much-copied charity stripe dunk was the most awesome ever. Even though I hate Jordan, I still have that framed poster up in my "guy" room.

Jordan's foul line takeoff was itself a copy of Dr. J's original from '76.
