Houston's McGrady sued over dog attack at Florida mansion

By MIKE BRANOM, Associated Press Writer
    January 20, 2005
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady is being sued by a man who had the tip of his nose bitten off by the player's Rottweiler last year.

Fred Chamberlin, 57, was working at McGrady's home in southwest Orange County on Aug. 25 when the dog attacked him.

The lawsuit, asking for unspecified damages, was filed Wednesday in Orange County Circuit Court.

``What we want is for a jury to decide what's fair, as far as paying Fred for what has had to come out of pocket, both in the past and in the future,'' Chamberlin's attorney, Eric Faddis, said Thursday. ``He's definitely going to need more plastic surgery, and we've got to be sure he has the resources to pay.''

McGrady employed Chamberlin as a home maintenance engineer at his 18,000-square-foot mansion. The two-time scoring champion played for Orlando for four years before being traded to the Rockets last summer.

McGrady, in Orlando on Thursday to play his former team, acknowledged his dog attacked Chamberlin and nearly bit his nose off.

``I feel terrible,'' McGrady said. ``I didn't think he had it in him.''

McGrady said his pet is a ``very vicious dog,'' but that he is usually nice. He did not have the dog euthanized after the attack.

According to Faddis, Chamberlin was attacked on the second floor of the mansion after climbing a flight of stairs. When Max jumped him, Chamberlin fell backward down the 11 stairs.

``The dog was trained to attack on command, and Fred has no idea why it chose to attack him,'' Faddis said.

I'm just wondering what the guy looked like without the tip of his nose.

Rofl, dam I didn't realize anyone could be that ugly, much less voluntarily make themself that way. I've seen Michael before, but something about that picture just makes me throw up.

This reads like a story about the callous, insulated rich of centuries ago. They had vicious guard dogs, too.

With apologies to the animal lovers here: Euthanize the dog.

    A house that big probably needs a full-time handy-man. 18,000 sqft. Wow.

    As a dog owner - I'd agree.

I imagine this dog has spent more time around this guy than Tracy. So if he'd attack him for no reason, I can't see why he wouldn't attack McGrady for even less of a reason.

If I were Tracy, I'd put him down.

TMac should never have admitted it's a "vicious" dog. If the dog hasn't bitten anyone before, then he'd be safe under the "one free bite" torts doctrine. Oh well, he can afford it, and I guess it's the right thing to do to buy this guy a nose tip. Otherwise, he'd have to roll like Humpty:
