Anybody heard this station yet?? I saw a TV ad last week and checked it out. It's called "The Point", and it's very nice. Stuff from the 80's and late 70's, and their tagline is "10,000 songs in a row with no commercial interruption". I think they're serious too, because I've been listening off and on for about a week and haven't heard a single commercial.

Now, if there is anybody here that's familiar with the radio biz, then maybe they can answer this...Exactly how does a radio station stay in business without running ads?? I haven't heard a DJ on the station either, so that might have something to do with it...

I think that is just a promotional thing to start. 94.5 did the same thing when they switched to 107.5.

Just to get listeneers used to the station.

Houston radio, as far as rock and roll, sucks. We have needed some new stations for years. I tried this one out, and it's not bad, but Houston needs much more to compete with Austin.

As far as no commercials, rim is right, it's just a promotional thing to get you to listen. Steve Robinson (from Steve and Jeff and the morning Buzz) is a friend of mine. I asked him about that very thing a few years back and he says the same thing....just a promo gimmick.

Behad, Houston has some excellent rock stations. Rock 101 KLOL plays all the great stuff from The Stones to the 80's hair metal (an ocassional RATT or Motley Crue song is great to get rid of your frustrations) to some of the new alternative rock. KLOL would be perfect if they didn't broadcast Cowboys games every week...

93.7 plays all the great classic rock, and The Buzz plays the newer artists. Even Mix 96.5 is good on Friday Nights when they play nothing but 80's music...Yes, I admit it...I'm an 80's music junkie...

104 KRBE is pretty sad. They have been in a downward spiral for some time now, and are fully into "major suckage" mode right now...

Austin radio is pretty good, though I haven't listened to it much. KSBJ is pretty nice, but do they have the same DJ 24/7? I swear, every time I tune into them, that same guy seems to be on the air. 101X is pretty nice. I heard Dynamite Hack the first time I listened to them. Apart from those two, I didn't find much else but country stations.

I live here, just south of Houston, and have for all of my 37 years. And I still say Houston radio sucks. Every time I go to Austin or New Braunfels I find plenty of better stations out of Austin or San Antonio. Maybe I am just in need of something new. KLOL has that crappy show in the morning, The Buzz has a good show, but poor music, and 93.7 plays some good stuff, but it is so repetitious to the point of nauseum.

A good alternative, if you can get it, is KACC, 89.7, out of Alvin. It is the Alvin Community college radio station. Good music, few commercials. The DJ's are lousy, but they are just students, and you don't here them for long. The only problem is that you got to be on the south end of Harris county, or in Brazoria or Galveston county (like me) to hear it clearly.

Except for 610 and sometimes 950, all Houston radio stations suck.

    Behad,

Rice U used to have a great station. KTRU I believe it was. Is it still around?

If it's any consolation, except for WBGO (jazz public radio out of Newark), New York radio is also pretty dismal.

    91.7 KTRU (Rice):
    - Is still around.

    90.1 KPFT (Pacifica):
    - Isn't bad depending on you taste, though you do have to listen at the right time.

    Behad,

That one female DJ on KACC....what's her name? Man, I can't remember, but you'll know who I'm talking about. If they had a Special Olympics for DJ's, she'd be the poster child. She downright SUCKS!

Anyway, I better stop now...before I get even meaner. KACC plays a good mix of music; if you are south of Houston (Clear Lake get's the station nice and clean), you should listen in.

Actually, I live in Omega Bay (that canal community where Hwy 6 and I45 meet)

It's scary, but my true address is in La Marque, or as the telemarketers say, "Lay Mark Que"

It might be a good station but it can't be better than the old 106.9 Z-ROCK. That station absolutely kicked ass! I cried the day it was bought out by the Christian music people. I guess they finally ended.

I've listened to 106.9 a little and all I hear is 80s dance music.

Most if it is not what I listened to in the 80s, but I can stand it, because I know most of it.....

I usually don't listen to the radio at all. I prefer my tapes (geez, wouldn't a CD player be nice). But, when I do, I usually listen to 93.7, but as someone stated, they get pretty repetitive.

One big reason why I think Houston radio (music side) sucks so much, is that there is NO competition. No one has any balls to compete against another station. For example KRBE is Top 40. Well they are the only one. And 106.9 while a great idea, is another example of this. Radio is becoming very fragmented. CBS radio has 2 FMs (KILT & KIKK) and they don't compete they complement.

Now that Clear Channel has basically taken over every market in the US it can only get worse. I see more canned syndicated programming for the AMs and the FMs..... Well what can you do on an FM if all you do is play music and read liners?

Trust me, you haven't heard bad radio until you've lived in San Antonio. Commercials are on all the time. Not much music. Mostly just commercials. And the stations suck too. We /just/ got a rap and hip hop station that is pretty good, but as a whole, it's all crap. The morning shows are even worse . . . no music in the morning, just talk, on every station, and not even funny . . . just bad.

Y'all have it good in Houston comparitively. 97.9 is pretty good, but it can get a bit too much R+B for my taste. 94.5 is pretty good. 104 ain't too bad . . . morning show is epic. The rest is pretty much the same as everywhere else. When I was in Houston this summer, I started listening to 90.1 in the morning -- Democracy Now on Public Radio. At night it's not too bad either -- there's a different show every night and some of them cater to very specific tastes (Monday - Gay and Lesbian hour . . . not for me [IMG].
