Steve Logan

Why haven't the Rockets pursued signing Steve Logan. I am from Cincinnati and he is the best Bearcat point guard to come out of college since Nick Van Excel. He was runner up three years ago for College Player of the Year and had a contract dispute with the Golden State Warriors and has still not signed. He is the best clutch shooter I have ever seen (next to Mad Max) and shoots 93% free throws. The Warriors would give him to us for a bag of peanuts and for all I know he may at this point be a free agent. Andre Barrett and Brandin Knight are not even comparable to Steve Logan. He is young and could make an immediate impact with the Rockets. The Rockets were looking to draft him and he was taken two picks in front of us....now would be a great time to pick him up.

 

Not really sure....last I heard he was still sitting out hoping to be released or traded. He averaged over 20 pts a game his senior year (w/93% free throw shooting which led the nation). His team was the number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Bobby Huggins puts his players through hell to make them NBA tough and Logan is no exception. Look at the success of Kenyon Martin, Ruben Patterson, Nick Van Excel, Danny Fortson, etc... We keep picking up "decent" Big East point guards who are questionable shooters who averaged only 10 pts a game against college talent. This guy would definitely be a major upgrade at the point guard position!!!

 

I truly hope somebody from the Rockets organization reads this thread and checks this hidden gem out. He has been a forgotten player and would be worth a tryout.

Notes: Steve Logan will be included as one of Cincinnati's all-time greats and Logans name dots the Bearcats' record book. The All-American played both point and shooting guards while at Cincy, but he's a long-distance scorer by trade.
Logan leaves Cincy as its No. 2 all-time leading scorer (behind Oscar Robertson) with 1,985 points and second in career assists with 456. As a senior last season, he set a new UC career record for free throw percentage (.861) and has two of the top four single season free throw percentages (.880 in 2000-01, .878 in 2001-02). He also set new UC career record for most victories (111) and games played (135).

In his senior season, Logan was C-USA's scoring leader and ranked among the nation's top 14 scorers. He topped the 20-point mark in 22 games this season and 39 times during his career, with eight 30-plus points games. Had seven or more assists in 13 games last season. Logan averaged 21.5 points over his last 56 games which included a streak of 52 straight games of double-digit scoring.

Logan was FOXSports.com and CNN/SI.com national player of the year and a consensus first team All-America selection by the Associated Press, Basketball America, Basketball Times, CNN/SI.com, ESPN.com, FOXSports.com, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, The Sporting News and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Logan also received the 2002 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation's top player 6-foot or under. He was Conference USA Player of the Year for the second straight season and the Most Outstanding Player of the C-USA tournament. Logan also was a finalist for the Naismith, John Wooden and Oscar Robertson national player of the year awards.

His only flaw is that he is a 6 foot point guard (which the Rockets don't seem to mind). He is second all time to Oscar Robertson in scoring and plays tenacious man to man defense. Sounds like a good pick up for Van Gundy. Barrett & Knight weren't even 3rd team All-Americans which makes me wonder what they are doing with the elite of the NBA. Logan was a consensus 1st team All-American and CNN (and Fox) National Player of the Year. He is worth a 10 day contract to see what he can do.

I respect what you are saying about his passing ability, but he averaged over 5 assists per game while still managing to average 22 pts a game. He is a good passer who can hit the big free throws come "stress" time and his passes to Kenyon Martin certainly did not prevent him from becoming the first overall pick in the NBA draft. I fear point guards who cannot hit at least 70% of their free throws. Hard to say if the Rockets would have won their championships if Sam Cassell hadn't been able to knock so many clutch free throws.

On the positive side.....based on our past experiences it would be easier to make a trade with Dallas than Golden State. He made a huge mistake with the demand for a guarenteed contract, but that still does not take away from his obvious basketball skills. It appears as though he has learned his lesson and he could be a steal if the Rockets could acquire his rights from the Mavs.

 

Clutch or anyone on this board.....if you have any contact with people within the Rockets organization it would be greatly appreciated if you could bring Steve Logan's name up.
