Watching Dikembe Mutombo dominate on the boards last night made me think of the impact rebounding had on the Rockets overall play. Digging deeper, I found an astonishing stat: the Rockets are 17-3 when outrebounding their opponent, and 2-12 when outrebounded. I dont think having Juwan (as much as I love his jumpshot at the top of the key) or Mo Taylor averaging 4 rebounds a game is helping our team at all. My wish would be to add someone like Troy Murphy who can swallow the boards consistently like Deke did last night.
Rebounding numbers are misleading because there are more rebounding opportunities for your opponent when you shoot bricks and don't go to the free throw line.
Dikembe has been drinking from the fountain of youth. The guy is playing like a monster. I can't blame JVG for subbing in Dikembe quickly.
Rebounding is huge, no question. I think we all realize how much better we would be with a rebounding 4 on this team. Heck we improved our rebounding when Sura came back after his back surgery. I think it is obvious we cant play Mutombo and Yao at the same time but imagine if Mutombo's 15 rebounds was transplanted on a rebounding 4 that could play with Yao? Devistating! The Rockets I believe are dead LAST in the league in offensive rebounding. We get no put back shots for easy points. If we can ever get into the top 15 or so then I think that would make a BIG difference. CD should put all his efforts into a strategy to recruit Stromile Swift with our FULL MLE this summer. Recruit him the same way the Suns put on a full court press to get Steve Nash.
rebounding is the key to every teams success. i would like to know what other teams records are when out rebounding thier opponent...
You are correct, the first team I checked, the Spurs, are 23-2 when outrebounding their opponent. But since the Rockets are 18th in rebounding, we desperately need to add a PF who can grab boards.
of course! it will make us better because rebounding wins. we are a poor rebounding team so we need a rebounder more than anything.
In regards to rebounding, I think the real key is how many offensive rebounds we allow the opponent. I'd like to see the over and under records for different opponent offensive rebounding totals. Rebounding totals in and of themself are a function of shooting and defense. If you shoot well, then there are less opps for offensive rebounds. And if you defend well and cause your opponent to shoot a low percentage, there will be more rebounding opportunities for you. Every team in the league will have extremely skewed records when you look at them in light of their rebounding totals. So really, the only way to measure whether we are doing our job on the glass or not is to see how many offensive rebounds we allow and how many offensive rebounds we get. Or to break it down even more fine, what percentage of the available defensive rebounds did we garner and what percentage of our own missed shots did we actually rebound? Anybody got those stats?
I think we are 28th in offensive rebounding (somebody check me on this) and we average 2 less offensive rebounds per game than our oppenent.
Well, I would expect our opponent's offensive rebounds to be a little high because we are rated like #2 or #3 in the league in team defense and shooting percentage against. That means the opponent is missing a lot of shots and there are a lot of opps for them to board. See my point? Compare us to the other top defensive teams in the league. Is SA down with us in offensive rebounds allowed?
Deke can get his own rebounds because he's just plain better at it. Yao needs a second body down there. if we had a body like Cato down there helping out, I'm pretty sure Yao would have improved his rebounding numbers to double digits this season.
The funny thing is that if we SHOOT well the other team gets far less rebounding opportunities, so of course it looks like we win more often when we outrebound the other team. DD
Don't overlook the fact, on the defence end, He always does boxout people's Job for his teammate, on the offence, he was box out by the opposite players, becasue JVG don't give up fast break point, he always want his man run back ASAP, and leave Yao fight for offence rebound one against three.
