I know JVG won't go for it, but even if Yao is 7-6, why not put him at PF and Mutombo at C?

That lane would have a presence when anyone penetrates.

The slowest frontcourt in NBA history wouldn't work.

I wouldn't want the two to start together or play the majority of their minutes together, but in some situations it would be effective. Last night for example, when Dikembe was shutting Duncan down and Yao was finding his rythem offensively in the 4th quarter, it would have been nice to see both of them out there.

It all depends on the matchup, Nasho and Duncan, Yes... Amare and Marion, No...

the only real problem with this is if Mutumbo and Yao get in foul trouble at the same time. then who juwan and MOT?

<--- I want to see if I'm a contributer now!!

The 2 played together for the last .7 seconds of regulation against the Nets. Mutombo was guarding the inbound guy.

Nets didn't score. It worked! 1-0 when playing together.

Seriously, they should try it out at times. Maybe against bigger, slower front courts like the Spurs.

You can't play to centers together at the same time, silly.

No way, no how. Yao c an't guard PF's./ He is way too slow. Deke at PF might work, and Yao at C for the slower teams. BUt man...if Yao was our PF we would get killed, he would be in worse foul trouble than he is now. ;)

i think they are way to slow to pull this of. a fast front court would kill us. Neither mutombo or Yao can play PF, they do not have the vertical quickness for it. or the horizontal quickness, basically they just lack quickness:D
Maybe against other big slow teams. but i do not now any. maybe the spurs. because there is no way that anybody on our roster can guard Duncan.

(ok 1600 posts, damn i spend way to much time here:D:p)

Mutumbo and Yao can't handle the minutes. There would be periods where both would be off the floor and the same time and we would have Juwan or MoT playing center.

In most circumstances I say no, but last night they should have. At the end of the game like the 5 minute mark I so wanted JVG to bring in Yao for Taylor not Mutombo. The Spurs had Duncan & Nesterovic in. Mutombo was guarding Duncan. In that situation where both Yao and Mutombo can guard both guys why not use them both at the same time. Unless ofcourse neither one of them know what the PF is supposed to do in the offense.

    No!

Because Mutombo can't guard the quick PFs of the league. End of Story!

Mutombo isnt Cato. Cato, even as slow as he was, was a MUCH quicker defensive player in terms of lateral quickness and quickness out on the floor.

In addition to both guys being too slow, with Yao’s inability to hit a jump shot this season and Mutombo never being a threat 15+ feet from the basket, teams would really crowd the paint area knowing those 2 are ineffective anywhere else. The Rockets would be relegated to being nothing more than a 3 point shooting team.

    Start Dikembe alongside Yao?

I remember last year, Cato and Yao often started together, and there seemed to be some degree of success doing so, since Cato was better on the boards and blocks than Yao, leaving Yao free to avoid those ticky-tac defensive fouls that seem to plague him.

I was wondering if anyone thinks that starting Dikembe at PF alongside Yao would make any sense, since Dikembe is more of a rebounder/blocker than Yao, and would (hopefully) prevent many of Yao's early game fouls since Dikembo could handle some of Yao's defensive assignments. Dikembe could also set screens, and leave Yao open in the paint.

I know they can't spend all game together, but just for the first 7-8 minutes, to get Yao off to a good start (with no fouls).

Cato is alot faster then Mutombo is. And even he had alot of trouble defending the quick PF. i think we wil get killed on defens with those two on the floor. so i do not see it happening

I agree that they shouldn't do it. Not quick enough.

But for those who think they should...can you think of a front line this would work against BESIDES the Spurs? I sure can't.

It does work, actually...but only on NBA LIVE, and only when the fatigue is off. ;) :D
