When Yao's contract is due, do you believe he deserves a max contract. His raw numbers don't add up to a max contract, but his worldwide marketability does.
By his raw numbers alone and what he will be in the league he technically doesn't deserve a max contract. He is not a superstar type player that will dominate in this league. He will however be a very good player and play a vital part in this team. Big men are hard to come by and big men with talent are even rarer. I will be the first to say he might not be the dominate center we thought he would be but he can be a center to anchor this team with T-Mac and the right pieces. You have to also look at it from the amount of money he generates becasue of the new market he brings to your team. The jersey sales in china and across the globe. Getting the Houston Rockets name all over the map now and selling more and more products. Bringing people to the stadium and things like that. If we were to base it solely on skills i would say he doesn't get the MAX. But when you factor in everything else and the amount of revenue it has given LES just having him here. He would be a fool not to give him the MAX
The truth of the matter is there are only 6 max players in this league: Duncan, KG, Shaq, TMac, Kobe, and Lebron. Everybody else is not truly Max players but they get max dollars because of the fans they bring to the gate. Nowitzki, Jermaine, Amare, Marbury, Francis, Iverson, Pierce, Webber, Yao, Nash, Pau, Kidd, Jefferson, Carter, Baron, Rasheed they're all at least one notch below the first 6.
I would think so, considering what he brings for the team.....revenue. He will never be that dominating force though.
Well since other teams would offer him a max contract w/o much hesitation to steal him from us, yea, that's his worth. Stat production isn't what generates the contracts, it's the market that does.
Before everybody claims whether he deserves or not, can we have a standard criteria? If yes, we can find out easily. If not, what's the point to discuss. It's just like arguing whose dream lover is better. Since this topic won't die for another maybe two years, can we once for all have a sticky thread to determine the criteria at first? Points production? Championship? or the main focus in a team with at least Conference Championship? If that's the rule, then T-Mac, Lebron, KG are out. The revenue the star players bring in? Then even VC deserves it, not to mention Yao. For me, the guy who pays the salary - the owner, decides who deserves or not, depends on his own view, whether it's money or title, or the combination of it. If we really really love this topic, have to open a fresh thread every other day, why don't we set the criteria at first, before we jump into conclusion?
i agree with your point but you probably have to put nowitzki and jermaine o'neal up with those six as well. yao will get the max whether he deserves it or not, i still think he can live up to it.
If the luxury tax is still here with the new collective bargaining agreement, Les will still cap any the salary which means all that extra Yao money means zilch for team performance. No championship-contending team would give the current Yao the max contract unless the luxury tax clause is eliminated allowing for some of that Yao money to be spent on players without penalty. Giving max contracts out haphazardly is a recipe for continual mediocrity.
Don't give extension after this season and don't match other teams offer for Yao, just let him go, save your 4 mil bloody money for real scrubs. Your team all set for championship under softy mac. Hahahahah...
why are we covering this AGAIN? attention whores... to answer the question honestly.... yes..not only will he get it...we will have to give it to him as long as he continues to have more good games than bad cuse that is what the market will bear for good bigmen that average what he averages/will avergae by the time contract time rolls around.
Win or lose, if any one player would take most of the fan base with them if he were to leave........he's worth it.
Can't believe this is even a question. Position: 2nd best player of any position is a max player. In fact, top 3 player of any position should be max player. Stats: In NBA, any 19/9 player who consistently requires double team is a max player. Players with worse stats sometimes get paid max. Marketing: Yao generates a lot more revenue than what he'll get paid as a max player. In other words, Yao is paying Les. Reality: All 30 teams will pay Yao max. Conclusion: Yao is underpaid even if he gets the max. If this is baseball, Yao would be paid a lot higher than current NBA max.
To not give Yao the Max is a slap in the face and an insult. This will cause Yao to lose "face." Making somebody lose "face" in the Chinese culture is one of the worst thing you can do. Everybody knows the Knicks and Lakers will give Yao the max and beyond if he's available. Yao not getting the Max is a pipe dream, so quit asking the question already.
Seriously, Can Clutch implement a rule that only those who have more than 1000 posts and are contributing members are allowed to start a thread? It's getting out of hand lately.
YES...He does... 18.5 pts a game 9 boards a game a block or two a game usually.. come on people we are spoiled by DREAM...there wont be another! Yao's numbers look good to me as a TRUE center. SECOND BEST IN LEAGUE!!
