let me give you guys a clue. i am a chinese.

in china, mavs has been translated into "little bull", that is a mistake and many people know that. i do not know where this translation come from, but we have used it for years, its not likely to change it now.i think such accident always happen between two diffenent languages.

so, in this cartoon, the chinese words says "some guys toltured a little bull(mavs) in public".

i don't know what "maverick" would translate to chinese.

what does it really mean in english?

my feel is that it means something like a trailblazer you know? someone that does his or her own thing.

yes, i agree, that is a kind of person like....cowboy, they have their own idea, they are indifferent, so on, in fact there is a word means that, "¶ÀÐÐÏÀ"¡£

maybe i should compile some translations for nba teams in chinese, that can be very fanny.

now i just provide one, washington wizards, in chinese wizards is translated into "genius", but in hongkong its translation is "koradji", which one do you prefer?

I think it's just their depiction of his lips? Everytime I see T-mac in a chinese toon drawing, they always emphasis on his lips by making them seem inflated, and his eyes by making them droopy.

    Don't ask me why..

Get frustrated all you want, but you didn't have to take it out on the Texan's mascot.

For god sake, his skin has turned gray.

    a maverick would be a horse...like a wild horse.

wizard should be translated into something like magician or warlock or sorceror (sp?)....not genius

Not ususally. I think it almost always refers to cattle.

    Once Again:

    mav·er·ick [ mávv?rik, mávvrik ] (plural mav·er·icks)

    noun

    1. independent person: somebody who holds independent views and who refuses to conform to the accepted or orthodox thinking on a subject

    2. agriculture unbranded animal: an unbranded animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother and herd. By convention, it can become the property of whoever finds it and brands it.

Mid-19th century. Origin uncertain: probably named for Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803–1870), a Texas cattle owner who did not brand some of his calves.

I wasn't saying the Mavs' logo was a cow, I just brought up the definition because I think that's what the chinese cartoonist must have been going on. That said, I don't see how they could have missed the horse logo. The guy who drew that was probably just a hired artist who had to look up what the hell a "maverick" was to get an idea for his illustration. The Mavs probably went with the horse because there was already the Bulls logo out there. Their old logo was not so horse-oriented, just an M wearing a cowboy hat.
