I was at the game today and man...from where I was, the refs were making horrible calls. I did not have the pleasure of viewing instant replay, however, on a lot of calls, it seems they went the wrong way. Also, from where I was, it looked like Yao was getting mugged. Was I seeing things?

I don't normally like to complain about the refs... but they stunk and really it wasn't just against the Rockets - in all fairness, Carter doesn't play enough defense in a week to get 6 fouls ;)

i really think yao should start hitting back and getting into minor altercations when he gets grabbed/pushed/tripped/etc......this will force refs to start calling all the contact more closely and yao will either live at the foul line or get deep position every possession

In all fairness Carter played D with his hands, didn't move his feet, was a D - liability, and justified foul calls.

    What happened to his greatness?

Yao WAS getting mugged under that basket. It was like a wrestling match under there, but the refs didn't care. The game was going to be played outside of the post as far as they were concerned. Punks.

I seriously thought at one time that Yao was going to start throwing elbows.........or at least think about it.....

Thats exactly what he needs to do. If he does that, they'll clean the rough play up.

Yeah, sometimes I wished I could afford the expensive seats in the front row. I would love to see SOMEONE come down on the refs. I don't care who, JVG, assistant coaches, players, even the fans in the expensive seats. I know if I was down there, I would be yelling, screaming, waving my arms. I would make sure they noticed me. Okay, sorry, done venting. It's just kinda hard to make them hear you from the upper deck...

i thought that was true but they give the defense the benefit of the doubt atleast 90% of the time on yao ming. even when he's agressive he gets called for a charge. nothing has ever frustrated me more during a basketball game then watching the crap that yao deals with.

No, I think what pippendagimp is advocating is for Yao to get into 'minor altercations' like rough play up to the point where you could almost see a brawl breaking out; that's the only way for Yao to get better treatment.

i just hope one day yao will throw the ball straight at the ref's face and get ejected n suspend for 3 games.... if he did that, no refs in this league will call tick tack fouls on yao no more!!!!

What Yao needs to do is get the first tech for arguing with the ref. And then get the 2nd tech for fighting with some lunk who has been grabbing, holding, banging, hacking, slapping, and pushing him in the post. He should throw down against some unskilled big schmuck like Fortson who can't possibly match up with him but just makes a living by beating on people as a designated hatchet man.

But unfortunately, I don't think he will ever do it. That's why this team needs a hatchet man, a thug, that will throw down and take care of that kind of stuff. My goodness, we've got 4 PFs on our roster. Why doesn't Van Gundy designate somebody like Spoon to go in the game and just start cleaning people's clock without regard to the foul count. Just bust up anybody that comes into the paint if they start all that rough stuff on Yao. Walk down the floor on the defensive end, and give all the rough stuff right back to them and more.

This team is way too passive in the paint. Unfortunately, they are waiting for Yao to show some good old American aggression and it just ain't gonna happen. We need our Maurice Lucas.

I thought that once Yao was called for his third foul early in the second that JVG should've left him to dare the refs to call a 4th foul on him before the half. I have a feeling that if we would have had the lead we expected that JVG might have done just that.

Regardless, I think something like that or the minor altercations mentioned earlier in the thread for Yao to start getting some respect from the officials. He sure ain't getting it now.

What's really odd is that JVG is a Riley disciple. Look at Riley's teams after the Lakers. Ewing was never a tough, physical prescence. Neither was Mourning. Riley simply put some tough bruisers besides them(Oakley, Mason, Grant, P.J. Brown?) to bust up opposing players. If Yao has someone like that, he'll have a much easier time.

what bothers me the most is the MAJORITY of the time they DO call the foul, they dont reward Yao with freethrows when he was clearly shooting!

ex. he gets a rebound and is going up for a layup/dunk but is held by someone..

This was a very poorly officiated game. Yao or JVG needs to do something about the calls made on Yao, get pissed, get a tech, let the refs know that they aren't officiated Yao fairly.

The problem is league wide in that big guys can kill one another & not get whistled but if the little guys touch one another it's a foul. It's not just Yao, but he often comes out on the wrong end for sure.

The refs called a bad game tonight. Yao almost never gets the calls when he was being blatantly mugged and pushed out of the post. But whenever Yao was able to recieve the ball in the post in good position to score, the refs blew the whistle before he could make his move to the basket.
