I've got a question regarding the Nintendo game, Duck Hunt. How in the world did the TV set know where that gun was pointing? If video game technology was in its "toddler" stage at that point...how could they create something that the TV set could track? Seems a bit beyond the technology at the time. Just curious if anyone knows this.:)

Ah yes, Duck Hunt. I got that with my Nintendo deluxe game system along with Gyromite. Remember R.O.B., the Robotic Operating Buddy? :D

This is not a correct explanation of how it works. That guy says that the gun senses electrons passed from the TV's cathode ray tube, and thus, won't work on a LCD screen.

That's wrong. It's not that hi-tech. It's just a light sensor. (and thus, probably will work on a LCD screen if brightness and contrast are strong enough).

I should've been more precise in saying that you have to read the second guy's correction of the first guy in my link.

That ****ing robot sucked - other than Gyromite it was useless.

I kept losing the little pieces it held too.

that's all i ever did back when i got my super marios bros. I/power pad/duck hunt 3 in 1 game on christmas morning 1988 to start my nintendo collection. funny, nintendo has had a renaissance in my house over winter break. my sister, friend's brother, and i have been playing it a ton. also bought a whole bunch of new games that i never had but used to play like tecmo basketball, paperboy, rampage, bases loaded, burgertime, and rc pro-am. nothing beats tecmo super bowl still. and i am the undisputed master of that game. i just school my friend's brother over and over on it.

also, we actually played duck hunt for real and the shooting was easier than i thought it would be. one of the first things someone asked was how the tv knows when you shoot the ducks. it tells you to make sure the contrast is big so this explanation makes sense.

man old nintendo games are awesome.

Ya got me. I did that all the time. That dog pissed me off like no other....man, if that wasn't the game that caused me to want to cheat like never before. :p

Does it work the same way in modern light gun games, like House of the Dead and what have you?

True...were his explanation accurate, then the game wouldn't really work if you played it by shooting at the ducks in a mirror on the wall opposite of the TV...but it does. Try it sometime. I my dad was the grandmaster of playing Duck Hunt in the mirror.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes the honking horns of your traffic make me want to get out of my BMW.. and run off into the hills, or wherever.. When I play "Duck Hunt", I wonder, how those flying demons get into the glowing box and why I can destroy them with a magical stick. I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - when a man like my client slips and falls on a sidewalk in front of a public library, then he is entitled to no less than two million in compensatory damages, and two million in punitive damages. Thank you.
