hey everyone. i need your help with a little something. well i was looking to order an xbox today. and i can either choose the original large "duke" controllers or the new smaller S controllers. i was wondering if you guys could know your opinions of the pros and cons of these controllers the deal i just purchased on ebay was the xbox holiday gift pack with ncaa 2005, top spin tennis... along with another controller and crimson skies all the games are all new and sealed. the system is slightly used. it came to about $150 before shipping. what do you guys think?
If you have smaller hands, then I would recommend the smaller controller. I bought a first gen when they only had the large controller. It was okay but it is too big in my opinion and the black/white buttons were poorly placed. These buttons have been moved down on the S controller and are more accurately pressed and accessible. I personally don't see why anyone would go with the large controller unless you just have really long fingers and bigger hands than normal. Although, it does have a different feel than the S controller, I find the S controller much lighter and easier to use. That's my take.
ahhhh thanks surfguy. i think im going to start contributing more to the forums. long time reader, new poster. you guys give some great and funny advice. what about the games that came with it? i havent played them but have read some ok reviews.
I haven't played any of those games so I dunno. I hear that Top Spin may be the best console tennis game around and Crimson Skies is supposed to be pretty good. I think they both have xbox live! capability if I'm not mistaken. I will eventually get around to trying them out via renting from gamefly. I've been playing MechAssault 2 some but not much. I am currently playing The Chronicles of Riddick which is a damn good game in my opinion.
The large controllers are big and bulky, I don't see a reason why anyone would want one either. Now when I play with a big controller, I actually feel like it slows me down in Halo. I'll put it to you this way - my roommate has 4 large controllers for his Xbox, and I ended up buying a small controller for an Xbox I don't own. Whenever he plays now he plays with my small controller. Does Microsoft make wireless controllers? I thought they did, but I haven't been able to find one.
i thought microsoft burned all the old controllers? truley one of the worst designs ever but the new ones are reallly good. both top spin and crimson skies are excellent games and both are xbox live compatible.
when me and my roommate and the guys next door play multiplayer halo(3 x-box's)...there are 12 controllers...9 are big. Lets put it this way. the 3 small one's go first and are fought over every time.
I cant stand the small controllers, they feel like a cheap knockoff controller... The "DUKE" just feels better in the hand to me...I play lots of Halo and 1st person shooters... All my friends play with the larger ones, maybe its a old people thing...
That's what I thought too until I played with a small for a month straight. Now I hate going back to the big controllers. I've gone through the exact same thing that 3814 mentioned many times.
well im 6'1 and i have pretty big hands. i used to play halo with the duke. i thought it was comfortable. but ive been hearing so much praise about the S. i go to baylor. i cant wait to use baylor in ncaa football 2005. yes we suck, but i dont care. UT is going down!
controller design is such a huge part of console success that I have to think it's simply a hand size issue.... if you have big hands get the old one (and pack your magnums for the afterparty) if you have small hands, get the new controller... and don't worry about the party... the sorority girls aren't clamoring for the platain section, keep playing but I've never even held one... so....
I don't play too much Xbox, but I prefer the S controller. I remember when the Xbox barely came out and it took a while to get used to it, or at least get used to it the best I could. It just felt too big (bet no one's heard that one before). This reminds me of when they interviewed Kane from the WWE about video games (for those that don't know, he's like 7', ~ 300 lbs IIRC). He had these massive hands but even he said the regular controllers were too big. The games sound good too, from what I've heard. I also heard that Top Spin is one of the, if not the, best tennis games, which makes me wonder why Microsoft sold off that studio. Sounds like a good deal to me. This is kind of OT (still controller related though) but I saw this controller that seems pretty cool: This is just for the PS2 obviously (not sure if there is a Xbox version), but you can switch around the D-pad, 2 analog sticks, and the other 4 buttons. Don't know how this works, but I think maybe Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo (if they use a controller) should see if they can implement something similar next-gen. I guess it really make up for a bad design too. If they're are any issues with how the buttons are placed while playing a FPS, switch them around. Now you want to play a racing game, switch them around. And so on. Maybe I'm just overrating it a little bit, but it seemed to get some attention at another forum as well.
I have somewhat large hands and I find the S-type to be a lot more comfortable. The button placement is a little weird for some games, though-- NCAA Football, for instance.
I have had the XBox for 3 years now. I own both NCAA 2005 and Top Spin. Both games are awesome. Top Spin is the best Tennis game ever. And NCAA is the best college sport game yet. If you can get the wireless controllers, or the one with the fan in the back that cools your hands. I prefer he later if you play for any extended period of time. No sweating at all. But if you can't get either get the S control. The Duke makes sometimes easy tasks hard in games with the awkward white/black button placement. Espn College Basketball 2005 is awesome as well. Especially for 20 bucks. Has anyone heard the rumor that Madden is going to skipp 2006 and use the year to totally revamp it since it now has sole rights to the NFL?
Haven't played it, but it does look very awesome. I've heard nothing but good things about the game since E3, where some people gave it "Best of E3." The game clips I've seen of it are amazing, especially the engine. The quality of the in-game graphics allow them to use it for cutscenes and STILL look great. I'm sitting there watching a cutscene and can't believe how great the graphics look. This, along with a few games on the PS2, really show what developers can do with limited hardware. Just think what they can do next-gen. Unfortunately, I've been collecting quite a list of games that I need to play and I will probably wait until the PS2 version of this game comes out later in the year if I do get it. In fact, I'm kind of glad they did that anyways since it increases the chances that the game will sell well (95-100 Million vs 15-20 million.) Haven't hear that, although I haven't exactly been hanging out in Madden forums, where I imagine this would be a big deal. Nevertheless, I don't really see why they would do this. If they cared about us, they would probably try to spend an extra year to work on things, but as it stands now, they could still sell a few million copies at least just by selling Madden 2005 with updated rosters and the word "Official NFL game" thrown around a lot. Plus, I'm sure Microsoft would like having a Madden game, along with any other games EA could make, for Xbox2 later this year. If they waited until next year, the PS3 and maybe Revolution would most likely be out and they may offer better experiences for Madden fans (better graphics; a possibly different way of playing games). By being the only next-gen console to have Madden 2006, Microsoft can sell a bunch of consoles. If EA won't, Visual Concepts/ Take Two probably wouldn't mind selling some type of football game for Xbox2. It wouldn't be the "NFL" game, but it will look better than any football game available. Well, unless EA doesn't do a next-gen Madden, but a next-gen Arena Football game since they just recently bought that license too.
also another game ive been drooling over is nba street vol 3.

cause we all know yao jumps over people
