So what type of fan do you recommend for my processor, what's a good brand?

    What about case power supply?

Try newegg.com, they sell any type of computer equipment you could think of and they have user reviews of products. Fans are ridiculously cheap, and pretty much interchangeable.

Pun, if you want, I can ship you a few OEM heatsink/fans for Athlon XPs. We built about sixty shuttle XPCs, and I have boxes of heatsinks that will never be used . . .

It probably will cost about five bucks to ship them -- let me know if you are interested.

sorry for the delay...My time here has been short lately.

take Vengence up on hsi offer...the OEM fans are just fine.

and as far as power supplies go...I dont really pay attention to brands...I go by the maxim of you get what you pay for...

so I look at what is available...check to make sure it has plenty of power connections for my needs...and go with a middle to higher priced one.

If you buy a new powersupply, I recommend Superflower. It's also known as TTGI. You can usually get them for pretty cheaply (compared to the other top-end PS makers, and if you read reviews of the Superflower Power Supplies, a lot of folks put them right up there with PC Power and Cooling), they have pretty stable voltages, and they are quiet and reliable. I've got them in several of my systems after dropping Enermax. Directron will have them at a great price about once every week or two -- the 350 will go for about $20 when it's on sale. When it's not on sale, it's $30.

    Here's the one I'd buy

    Guys,

    need some help

recently upgraded my PC... now have 3200 AMD with 1 gig of ram and Radeon 9600 Pro with two 19 inch monitors running off it

now everything has been running well but i hadn't got around to re-installing any games... i bought NBA Live 2005 the install went well and then i started playing well actually just checking out a few menu's and then it just restarts the computer..... after a few tries over a few days of trying to play NAB Live 2005 it kept doing and then last night i went to watch amazing race on bs player and that even restarted the computer....

i removed the video drivers and then restarted and re-added them with the latest drivers from the ATI site... that seemed to work and allow me to watch Amazing Race last night

tonight i tried NBA live again and it seemed ok for 5 minutes or so and then restart... actually it did a couple of restart laps before getting back to windows......

i presume it something to do with the video card... am i right or is it something else

    help please

or if not i'll take it to the shop tomorrow night.....

    any ideas anyone???

First time reading the thread here. Pun, have you tried tried disabling all power management functions in the bios or xp? Maybe your pc is going into sleep mode/standy mode and your mobo has issues with this? ie. hd turning off etc.

I also noticed a checkbox for hibernation in xp. Maybe uncheck this if you have it checked.

I'll take that offer because like I said, my CPU fan is dangerously slow. How do would you like to exchange addresses.

The only time I had that problem, it was the video card...but a combination of the drivers/card.

My old video card actually had problems after I'd updated the drivers...turns out that I had more issues with video on my comp than anything. IT would freeze everytime Media Player played practically, and restart the computer. I never had much of an issue with games though.

The situation improved when I reverted to an older set of drivers. It went away completely when I got a new video card (the Radeon 9800)

You need to test: some other games and other video on your media player. Try a few different things out just to make sure it isn't a driver conflict. If they all have problems, maybe try a driver set from when it was working fine. Also check ATI's boards to see if other folks are having this problem as well. (This is very helpful from time to time).

Worst case, you got a bad card.

    Smeghetti....

Id lay odds on it being a driver problem..

for some reason....it appears you are runniing into a conflict between the drivers and NBA Live's files...

check EA and see if they have a known issue with the ATI cards/drivers...

as a test...uninstall NBA Live...uninstall the drivers....(follow the directions from ATI to totally uninstall all files)...and reinstall the vid card drivers...but hold off on reinstalling NBA Live until you see if the problem goes away...

btw...send me a link to the AR Ep from this week...my Tivo crapped out and only recorded the last 20 minutes of it.:(

:( I tried to install my capture card since I installed SP2 but it won't install, the drivers just won't install. DAMNIT!

AHHHHHHHHHHH..... as I typed this a big spider walked across the glass on my monitor! My lights were off and he just walked across the front of my monitor and the way the light was penetrating his body....it was pretty scary looking. I caught it in a wine glass and covered it with a piece of paper and threw him outside.

man...that got my heart beating quickly after a BFV match.

Ok, I haven't spent much time lately dealing with this specifc problem, but for years and years I encountered similar problems so I'll assume it still goes --

AGP, motherboards with non-Intel chipsets, and ATI are bad mojo. To prove my hypothesis, you're most likely going to have to bump the AGP speed down as low as it goes and give it a test run.

How you do that is an intresting question. Sometimes it's done via the BIOS and sometimes via the driver. You're going to have to "use your initiative". I used to have really bad issues with VIA chipsets and ATI rage 128 chipsets.

Additionally, you should probably look to see if there's a BIOS update. Another important thing is that if there are chipset drivers you may have to uninstall video drivers, install chipset drivers, and then install the video drivers on top of the chipset drivers.

Another source of issues -- Depending on how old your motherboard is, make sure that any setting for plug-and-play bios is on. In any case, after you do this, go to device manager, select the view menu, and select view devices by connection. Expand the heading of IRQ. If more than half of the stuff is on IRQ 9 you are screwed.

This happens on a system with the plug-and-play bios option where Windows XP or 2000 were installed with this bios option set to no. Under these conditions, windows tried to enumerate IRQ's for devices but was unable to get further than the BIOS. As such, it's trying to talk to devices @ IRQ 9 that are at other IRQ's and geting no response. Only solution is reinstall.

Final place to tweak -- Go to Start->Run and in the space type dxdiag and hit OK. There are all sorts of troubleshooting controls under this heading.

From my experience, the most likely outcome of taking it to a shop is a reinstall unless you get an exceptionally good tech. This is one of those really vague problems that doesn't warrant the hours of work that'd be required to solve it correctly so they'll just use the bazooka aproach.

OK, I downloaded and installed Motherboard Monitor. I am and have been running it for a while. The temp of my CPU has been steady, around 130-135 F and my case temp has stayed around 86 F. Is this too hot?
