I have to agree with the white guy's comment..Yao appear to have very little love for the team. I believe his main goal in the states is to learn and improve to a point such that he can take the Chinese team to a bronze metal in the 2008 Olympics.
Thus he can't play with full throttle every game cause he knows that he needs to stay healthy and injury free until 2008. The only time he goes out of this robotic mode is when someone embrasses him and his emotions take over.

I would like to see China win a metal in 2008 but sad to know that it would be at the expense of the Rockets.

Well, speaking for myself, I really don't care if people criticize Yao.

When it comes down to it, he's another multi-millionaire who plays bball for a living.

It's just gets a little annoying sometimes when comments about the general "meekness" of Chinese people or culture in general get into the discussion.

Just criticize the player. No need to make statements about Chinese culture in general. As a Chinese, I find it somewhat condescending when some white guy deigns to comment on the facets of our culture and people.

yes, i can see that some people are racially sensative. and for that reason i said in one of these replys that my intent was not to offend anyone even though what i said wasnt wrong.

and yes, i can see how mention of race and culture might catch my attention at first, but if i thought about it, i wouldnt have found it offensive enough to start a racial discussion or even mention it.

but it is obvious that the culture is different than the one here, and that anyone that is new to anything isnt going to know alot about it. and it is obvious that basketball is not only new to the culture, but being a fan is also new to alot of asian fans who have been introduced to basketball via yao ming. and being that i have posted on espn.com before yao ming was there, i have seen that the majority of the posters there most of the time are chinese. it wasnt an insult to say that they dont know because they are new to the sport and they are chinese. and the "free" part had nothing to do with anything except to say that its free for anyone to post.

i just think dont sweat the little things.

when you put it that way, i can understand what you might be upset with because i would not like it if i thought someone was calling my culture "a bunch of sissies". that is not what i meant to incinuate at all.

but humility and humbleness are a virture. what is important is your character. it wont matter if you played basketball when you are dead. i just think yao has a hard time seperating the two from his personal life and his professional life.

First, there is a lot to read about Chinese culture. Do you deny that cultures can influence one's behaviour? That does not mean that all in that culture may have that behaviour, but it does effect the propensity to have it.
Note that no one says anything about a race being born with this trait, it's about the culture. So if a caucasian was born and raised in China and was a Chinese citizen, they would presumably have the same propensities.

Second, the trait is not so much about 'meek', it's about politeness and the non-individual mentality. In the context of sport, it might be considered 'meek' when one's not agressive enough for the sport, but politeness and conisderation for others is not 'meek' in a normal context.

Stop responding to Daddy or defending him on his behalf. If you are really interested, just check out his posts in ESPN. He is here just to annoy the Chinese posters.

    ah, more crap from espn.com

since you are the one who is intent on spreading rumors, why dont you copy and paste one of those posts here that was intended to annoy chinese posters. in fact, copy and paste any of the archived posts from that forum here and show everyone these posts that are so absured about yao, that it has so many intent on discrediting me.

who is really going to believe that i choose to post to post on a rockets forum just to annoy chinese posters. do you really think i care that much about chinese posters or any posters?? i would never know who you are, so the question should be, why do you care about annoying daddy so much??

you know what i think?? i think you cant find any, and i think that the reason my opinion hurt some posters so bad on espn.com is because before it got overran with crap, it was the most respected opinion because it ended up showing so many times correct. and now when i say things about yao it bothers you so much you have to find crutches like "yao hater", "steve lover", and the new "chinese annoyer". lol.

    The guy Daddy,

Please stop talk Chinese when you talk Yao. You can talk whatever about Yao. Do not not connect with the Chinese, Chinese include lots of people. I am an Chinese-American, when I talk a NBA player, I never talk American, English, whatever, it is not good at all. By the way, I never hate any Rox player.

Jeez, I got to the 2nd page of this thread and couldn't take any more.

You, Daddy, whoever you are. You came in here with some solid arguments in a couple of other threads. Stick to that. People throw crap at you about some other message board or bias or whatever, just ignore them and make your points about the game, and you'll be judged on what you say about the Rockets, not on what others say about you. But keep referring to yourself in the third person and veering away from the Rockets to talk about your knowledge and defend your reputation, and we'll start to believe you're in it for the ego.

It ain't about you. It ain't about me. It ain't about any punk who wants to accuse you of ulterior motives. It's about the Rockets, and your reputation here will come from the quality of what you say about them -- not from what anybody, including you, says about you.

i wish you would have let this thread die instead of bumping it to the top. i certainly feel the need to defend myself when someone starts questioning my post as having something to do with race.

however, your right. its not about me or what other people say. but its not about my ego or the third person either. i will be happy to be judged on my rockets posts alone. that is what i hoped when i came here.
