I think the punishment was excessive but I think it probably had to do with him being a drug dealer more than a dog killer. My brother in law got busted for having a shot gun than was 1 inch too short, and they went after him hard (trying for a prison term in huntsville) because they thought he was drug dealer.
Anyone that decapitates animals to send a message should be institutionalized. Although in prison he'll get hazed day after day after day. By Grapthar's hammer, this dog will be avenged

not to make this too political but... funny how this guy gets 6 years but a soldier in the army only gets 6 months for making people jump off a bridge at gun point
There is a mjor differenc e(in my mind) of killing for survival (food, clothing, self defense) and killing "to send a message" (killing for fun)
