One thing about Amare I noticed, a good portion of this FGA are actually him getting the ball and making a move on his own and either scoring or getting to the line.

He didnt seem to get alot of looks directly off Nash passes. Rather, he seems to benefit fromt he enormous amount of FGAs and touches that he gets out of the structure of the offense (quick shots).

So in theory, I dont think he directly benefits from Nash being on the court as some (including myself) may have thought.

I think Yao did as good a job on him as you could. I liked how Yao was REALLY agressive on the boards and thought he got a couple of bogus foul calls when he jumped right into Yao.

Does anyone know if that Amare lil spin dunk on Mutombo was on Sports Center? The whole TC was ooohing and aaaahing after that one.

Actually Amare scored 7 points when both Yao and himself were both on the floor at the same time, 5FT and 1FG (the AND 1 dunk when Yao scored on the other end and the Suns used 3 seconds to fast break). If my memory served right, it's a typical Yao vs. Amare night. Yao has an efficient game. Amare has an inefficient game but SICK dunks. Then everyone talked about how amare outplayed Yao. ;)

For the season, the Rockets are +6.0 when Mutombo is on the floor and -5.8 when Yao is on the floor. The 3 point shooters are basically the same. Yao, Taylor & Juwan all have negative +/-'s.

The Suns are +9.4 when Amare is on the court. As much as they score, only 5 Suns have a positive +/- with Marion being the lowest @ +1.9. 9 Rockets have a positive +/-. 6 Rockets have a better +/- than Marion. Of those 6 higher than Marion, 3 are starters (Wesley, McGrady & Sura) while 2 are in the rotation (Mutombo & Barry).

Now if most of our perimeter rotation has a better +/- than 2 PHX starters (Marion & Johnson)....how again are the perimeter players holding Yao back?

You nailed it. Isn't ridiculous that Marion has the lowest +/- among all Suns starters, and the only player besides Nash I want to get on my team is Marion?

Marion has been putting up an all NBA season and yet the +/- indicates that he is behind Johnson and Q. +/- is great but has some serious holes in it.

on a fast break, Amare dunks, fouled from behind by TMac, but the dunk rattles through. Yao went up for the block but couldn't get it.

I think that one should count.

    So 3 points maybe.

But yes... Yao owns Amare one on one. You don't see Amare getting doubled teamed off the ball, you can't afford to do that with the Suns. Furthermore, they kept putting hunter and marion on Yao so to not expose Amare.

The suns are really good though. That's too bad. Joe Johnson, Amare, put them on the Rockets and they are no where near as good. Great system for pretty good players.

I don't like this talk of perimeter players denying yao the ball. It happens, definitely. But sometimes Marion and Hunter were fronting Yao agressively. And Yao is doubled basically every time he gets it in the low post. And yao doesn't really seal off that well. Sometimes you can force it in there, but other times you can't blame the guards.

What needs to happen is that when Yao is single teamed, he needs to SHOOT. Every time. Yao's FG attempts are low in part because he doesn't get the ball often, but HE controls the rest, when he DOES have the ball he can choose to shoot it but sometimes he passes out.

Look at Amare. He doesn't even think about passing. Catches the ball in high post, willing to drive it in against three people and a 7'6" guy, completely ignores teammates. Very very selfish style of play. But when you hit a high percentage, fine. Your team needs you to be selfish.

+/- is definitely flawed. It doesn't take into effect that Deke is usually going up against the other teams 2nd/3rd string centers or the fact that Yao is never going to be in the game when the Rox are getting blown out and the other team has in its scrubs for the last 5 minutes of the game.

Man, sure are a lot of sour grapes round here. Amare's the superior player hands down. Yao will be a decent center in the league but that's going to be it. The guys big and can shoot fairly well, but he's the most uncoordinated and unathletic guy there is. and when a 6'7" small forward (marion) can guard your 7'6" center, you got problems. Not to mention his passiveness. I'll take amare any day of the week. Oh, and how many blocks is this 7'6" center averaging?

If Yao Ming were single covered and babied like Amare and had the 4 players in the league most fitting his play I'm pretty sure he'd be averaging 25 points a game too.

LOL then why would such a superior player be shut down by a soft 7'6 uncoordinated and unathletic guy and a 90 years old center? 5/15 FG and 6 turnover? Oh and how many block is this superior althletic freak averaging?

Yao is averaging 1.7 blocks this season- the exact same as Amare (except that Yao plays 5 fewer minutes a game than Amare). As for Yao being guarded by Marion, I was jumping out of my seat when they had that mismatch going and the guards never got Yao the ball.

Amare has blossomed to an exciting player. He's a better dunker and Yao's a better shooter. In all other respects, they are almost equal. That being said, I still think that I'd rather have Yao for two reasons. First, he causes mismatch problems that Amare will never cause. Secondly, Amare reminds me of Shawn Kemp and we all know what happens when the hops are gone. I think Yao will have a longer and more productive career.

Let's look at season stats - Amare wins, scoreboard - Amare wins, career averages - Amare wins, upside - Amare wins, player of the week awards - Amare wins, HEART AND DESIRE - Amare wins. I'll take Amare any day of the week. Oh, and let's not forget who won the ROY award, yep, Amare.

Utterly ridiculous. The Rockets have revamped their whole team to fit Yao. Barry, Wesley, McGrady. How many freakin shooters does Yao need on the court? 8. And you claiming Amare is babied is the irony of all ironies.

The Rockets played well in the second half last night but it wasn't enough. They're improving. But that's about it. Amare right now is a better player than Yao. Nothing wrong with that, he's emerged as one of the best players in the league.

I believe you are the only one.

Come on, how many points he got against Yao one on one.

Yao will be the great center in the league if the teams are using him properly, and now he is already far superior than decent.

He is the most coordinated and athletic guy in the league with his size, could you find any people which is taller than 7'4 with more athletic ability and play more times than Yao???

Yeah, when a 6'7 small forward is guard our 7'6 center, but he is not getting the ball consistenly, the team is in trouble, that's the main reason we lose the game.

Yao always play hard and bring his passion and aggressive into the game

Bill walton said: the great shot blocker is not always lead league the shot block, because they don't have the chance, the opposite player is afraid of the shot being blocked. Yao is the one.

Anyone that watched the game saw Amare consistently miss his shots when guarded by Yao. I did not even check the play by play and I had considered starting a thread similar to this. Yao has always played well against Amare.

This is certainly no knock against Amare but I don't recall him ever out playing Yao in head to head match ups.

As far as outside shooting goes,

    Nash + Johnson + Marion + Q >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TMac + Berry + Sura + Wesley

Even a fool can see that, I guess.

Please guys don’t tell me that Amare does not get double teamed. He does, even by the Rockets last night. There was one play in particular that really caught my eye in the second half. Amare received the ball on the baseline with Yao guarding him and you could immediately see Van Gundy on the sidelines flailing his arms telling all his players to go double Amare. Instantly, 3 or 4 Rocket players go running towards Amare to double team him.

So don’t even act like Amare was never doubled last night.

Amare outplayed Yao in their first matchup in the rookie season when both came off the bench for a duel.

After that, Yao significantly outplayed Amare 6 straight times with the exception of Amare making more impact on the game by taking the ball fiercely on Yao.

Yeah, You right, the rocket tried get players to fit Yao and JVG's half court offence, but they screwed themselves big time in the Tmac trade, Tmac is not effient outside shooter through his career, he is overrated so called superstar who can only score in the tranisition or driving into the hole, after the rockets realize the problem, they tried a couple of making up deals in Barry and Wesley, but it still not working, and now the rocket begin running so called Up temp game with bunch of old guys and turn Yao into the role player with limited mins, that's the real story of the miserible rocket land.
