I'm sure this topic has been discussed in years past, but since I've heard new versions are coming out I thought I'd ask again.

I'm considering buying either a ps2 or an xbox. Which would you consider best, and are they worth buying at this point? Even with the new versions will they still make games for them for quite a while? Obviously if I haven't bought one yet, I'm not a huge gamer so I doubt I'd spend huge money to buy a new one with they first come out.

I need a new method to procrastinate and put off college work more.

You probably can't go wrong with either. Just look at the game titles and see what you would enjoy more. I've had my ps2 since it came out and I'm still not tired of it.

This board is pretty split on this topic. I had both. I liked the XBox's graphics but hated the controller.

Plus I'm a huge Final Fantasy geek so PS2 wins for me.

    However, Halo ROCKED.

Unfortunately, my new gig doesnt leave me much time for video games......:(

I have a PS2 as well, and my impression is that you get more variety of games with SONY. But if you're not much of a gamer, that may not be that important to you.

I think looking at the different titles is a good idea. With XBox, for instance, you get HALO2....with PS2 you get SOCOM II. But I can't really speak to how XBox performs, online or off.

Does anyone know when the new PS version is due to come out? I'm guessing next December.

Like mentioned, can't really go wrong on either. Xbox live, Halo, and some other things that Xbox offers is a good reason to go with it, while the variety of great games (MGS, GT, FF, DMC, etc) on the PS2 is a good reason to go with that console. I really like RPG's, along with other genres that are a little thin on the Xbox and I don't care for console FPS's or online play (two +'s for the Xbox), so I prefer the PS2. It is at a small graphical disadvantage, but some games like Wanda and the Colossus and Grand Turismo 4 look absolutely gorgeous. IIRC, GT4 is like the first 1080i compatible game for the PS2 (the Xbox has a few, but not many), which is pretty good considering it also stays at 60 FPS and still looks awesome.

I imagine that the PS2, at least, will probably get some support going into next-gen and beyond. I believe the Playstation still got some support long after the PS2 came out, so I would expect the same here. EA supported it for a while and I will assume they would do the same with at least the Xbox and PS2 this time around. There will still be a lot of great games coming out this year and maybe into next year that may be able to hold you over if you decide to get a next-gen console later on. In fact, you may even want to consider getting a PSP or DS instead since they'll be getting a lot of support and offer some great gameplay.

I'm guessing that it will launch in Japan around March of next year, with a US launch maybe 6 months later. It really depends on how Cell, Blu-ray, and the Nvidia GPU progress. We'll probably get a better idea of things pretty soon. CES starts Wednesday, which may tell us more about Xbox2; there is an event in February that will include info on Cell; GDC is like in March, IIRC; and E3 at May. A considerable amount of info should be known in this time, especially around GDC and E3, where all 3 next-gen consoles are supposed to be there and maybe "playable" (don't doubt the Xbox2, but the other two). Of course this doesn't include any special meetings that may take place. I think there is another Microsoft event I'm missing and I think a Sony event as well.

    Hey RC,

From what you know, does this fall seem realistic for XBOX 2 to be released? I would have thought there would be better confirmation or even a real name for it by now if it was coming out this year. I know you are more of a PS2 guy but I am wondering of you have heard/read anything.

    Thanks guys..

Is one clearly better than the other as far as sports games?

The last new system I bought was PS1, I used to play a lot but was busy with other things and haven't played video games that much the last few years (which is why I don't have one yet)..

They are the same price, but I guess I could use my ps1 extra controller to save me a little money. But the xbox has the hard drive whereas I'd have to buy memory cars for the PS2 (Assuming the PS1 ones aren't the same)

mateo.. I know what you mean, I gotta get my playing in now before I actually have to leave the confines of the vandy bubble and enter the real world.. by the way from your other threads I'm glad to see you are doing well career wise.. gives me hope for my degree being valued :)

I think they'll have it out this year. The official name and more details will probably be announced at E3 this year.

    Rocket Fan:
A lot of people consider Xbox better for sports games due to the better graphics. If you have broadband internet then Xbox live is a huge bonus for the Xbox, PS2 games have online capabilities but the live interface is setup to be easier. Assuming you want to play games online.

The memory cards for PS1 won't work for the PS2(unless you are playing PS1 games) so you would have to buy a new one.

Most of the people I know of that are into Sports games swear by the XBox. The graphics on sports games seem to be better on the XB, and XB is marketed at a somewhat older crowd than PS2 in my mind, which is also a similar market for sports sims.

I haven't seen/read anything to suggest anything other than a launch this fall. DaDakota seems pretty confident of a November launch IIRC, which I agree with, and plenty of other info has said the same. I also believe that Microsoft said at one time or another that it would indeed be out this year (no maybe's about it). A few of the next-gen games also have release dates set for "2005" or even "Fall-Winter 2005," so more support for that release date. We'll probably know more for sure after Wednesday, if Microsoft talks about it at CES, which I think should happen given the timeframe they have (as you mentioned, more info should be coming soon given the expected release date).

Of course, they don't want to say too much, which may be why we don't have specifics on all the consoles. If they were to show their cards too early, Sony and Nintendo will have a chance to make adjustments and vice versa. I do think it is getting to the point where it is likely for Microsoft to start spilling the beans; in fact, I'm hoping some more specifics on the PS3 will also be known by the summer.

The Xbox wins that genre, much like any games that are multi-platform. Of course, I think Nintendo has a nice sports lineup with their characters, so maybe you should think about getting a Gamecube. ;) :p

DrLudicrous gave a better breakdown of it. I play sports games, but not online, so I wouldn't be the best one to get info from about online features.

Just beware of the "Disc Read Error" if you buy a PS2. I had my PS2 die out after owning it for 2 years. I bought another one and after 6 months had my first "Disc Read Error" just last week. Luckily a can of compressed air and a disc cleaner were able to fix it; this time. If i was presented with a choice today i would probably lean toward an Xbox because

    1.) Better Graphics
2.) Game selection means little to me. For the most part i stick with Football/Basketball/Baseball.

    Weird little X-box story:

A week ago we were at an xmas party at my cousins apartment and he pulled out some cheesy game called Dance Dance somethingorother for the XBox....all of us were saying "no way we play that, why do you have that?" Of course someone dared some guy to try doing Castles In The Sky and he fell all over the living room trying to finish it....but he did somehow. After that, everyone tried it out..

Anyway, the gals all loved it, somehow it turned the party up a notch, my cousin made a bad drinking game involving Jose Cuervo out of it, and everyone was laughing their asses off. Then the neighbor downstairs eventually complained and we all went out to hit some bars in the East Village.

I've never seen a group of gals get excited about a video game before. It was like Twister in those old school commericals.

(yeah, I was the guy who fell all over the living room)

Rocket Fan, Vandy will do you right.

I have both systems and the only sports title I buy for PS2 is Madden, and that's only because I'm used to the controls for so many years. No one has mentioned it, though it's not really a huge deal, but alot of the sports games allow you to use your own music with the XBOX and it's hard drive. I absolutely LOVED hearing the music I wanted when I scored a TD in ESPN2K5, etc. Graphics, smoothness (online & off), hardrive and features, and inernet capabilities (downloading rosters & patches, playing games, tournaments, season, etc.) all make XBOX better for sports gaming in m humble opinion.

Dance Dance Revolution. That game is VERY addicting. My wife and I bought the game with a couple of dance pads for my brother and his girlfriend and, once we hooked it up, everyone including my parents couldn't get enough of it.

Dance Dance Revolution. I've got that for PS2. You're right, it does look cheesy as hell at first, but its actually pretty fun. I have't graduated to having the guts to play it down at the arcade yet, but.... it is still pretty fun. A good workout too.

Has anyone tried to Karaoke revolution?

I was looking for a new PS2 yesterday and heard a RUMOR (from a Radio Shack employee at the Galleria, who had a PS2 on call from the Sony store) that the new PS2's will be recalled, due to overheating problems.

    JUST A RUMOR.

    icehouse.. that's worth knowing..

is the only dif in the new ps2.. that it's smaller?

I went to the store last night, of course they were sold out of xbox and ps2.. but they had ps1

I was surprised they are still selling it, and the ps1 design now looks a lot dif than the one I have.

In all honesty, XBox savior is the Halo franchise. If it weren't for that title, XBox would have gone the way of the TurboGrafx16, 3DO, NeoGeo, Atari Jaguar, and Sega Dreamcast.
