Since I know there are some other Vanderbilt associated people on this board I thought I would post this. Vanderbilt tailback Kwane Doster was shot and killed in his hometown of Tampa, Fl last night. I don't know all the details yet, but it appears he was an innocent victim. ESPN article says someone pulled up beside the car and shot, but according to some people they got calls saying it was a carjacking early this morning. I'm sure I'll find out the details very soon. Either way, it is tragic because as much as you hear about college athletes getting into trouble, he from all accounts was a good kid and a real student-athlete. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1953393 http://www.vucommodores.com RIP Kwane 1983-2004
Yeah, I saw that article this morning. Gotta feel for his family during this holiday season. I met him a few times and he always seemed like a real cool cat. RIP Kwane +++
That's terrible. It's good he didn't go to a school like Texas or it would have been a lot worse, I guess.
A very tragic incident by all accounts. Sorry to hear about it. Kagy - what do you mean by your comment?
briankagy.. was the comment in regards to the number of replies? For those who have never heard of him.. someone on the Vandy board put together a list of his accomplishments.. I haven't checked everyone of them, but I believe they are all correct.. 2002 AP SEC Freshman of the Year 2002 Coaches SEC Freshman of the Year 2002 College Football News SEC Freshman of the Year 2002 Sporting News Freshman Third Team All American 2002 SEC Freshman Rushing Leader 2003 ATHLON Preseason All-SEC Second Team 2004 ATHLON Preseason All-SEC Third Team 2004 Coaches All-SEC Third Team Pretty good player as well as person
brian.. nevermind at first glance I thought you were making reference to the thread about the arrests of kids from other schools.. im a little jumpy today I suppose.. I know what you meant.. if it was a bigger name player etc from a bigger school it would have gotten more publicity.. I was actually surprised it was on the front page on the side at least of espn.com
I don';t know this young man but this is a horrible incident I pray his family to be strong in this time of trouble. . . . Rest in Peace Mr Doster Rocket River
For those interested .. http:// http://www.wfla.com has a nice video of him under the 6pm top stories link at the top. Now they are saying the car pulled up and fired 5 shots. They do have a suspect in custody now which is a good thing. Very strange incident.. he wasn't the driver of the car.. don't know yet if it was a random thing or they were specifically being targetted
Thanks for the comments... this story is still strange.. no new news.. all we know is someone pulled up and started shooting... They don't have a motive or anything yet either... I suppose we really live in a world that if people get bored on xmas night they start shooting? the new info is that he had been at a family get together until like midnight and then wanted to leave so had a friend pick him up. (his car was probably in nashville like mine is right now).. so it's not like he was out somewhere causing trouble all night. he was with his family.. until past midnight
Update from ESPN: Running back confronted about vehicle TAMPA, Fla. -- Vanderbilt running back Kwane Doster was shot to death after his friends and a group of other men exchanged "trash talk" about their cars, Tampa police said Tuesday. Police continued to appeal for help in making an arrest in the Sunday morning shooting. Police said they have suspects but need witnesses who might have seen who fired the fatal shot. Doster, 21, was shot to death at a sandwich shop after visiting a local club with two friends about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. While leaving the club, Doster's friends had a discussion with three other men about their cars, said Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin. Both groups were driving what Durkin described as "show" cars, and the arguments centered on whose car was better. The two groups met again at a stoplight, where they again exchanged words and mean stares, Durkin said. The suspects were riding in an orange Infiniti. Blocks later, Doster and his friends pulled into a sandwich shop. The Infiniti pulled up, and one man got out and opened fire with a handgun, Durkin said. Doster, who was sitting in the back seat of his friend's car, was killed with a single shot. No one else was injured. "There was no indication they knew each other," Durkin said. "It's something so trivial, that trash talk goes on all the time. Then someone pulls out a gun -- inconceivable." Wow. I am speechless. I mean wow.
It sickens me. Instead of calming down as time passes from finding out about the car thing.. I just get more sickened. From the articles, they don't even know if Kwane was involved in the talk about the cars. It says his friends were. What makes me sick as well is someone on another board basically said if you hang out with idiots things like this happens. I'm sorry but talking about someones car in no way calls for this action to happen. Maybe you get mad and yell.. hey maybe even a punch is thrown at the extreme.. but how the heck can you shoot someone from that exchange of words. Furthermore, the fact that the person was carrying a gun.. sounds like he was looking for trouble when he went out that night... my guess would be that he was the one more likely to start the whole situation in the first place. It wasn't even a heat of the moment violent act.. he pulled into the parking lot after them later to do the shooting. he had time to think about it and still did it. Truly sick and I dont' think people who talk a little trash about cars are asking to be shot. When people are young and care about their cars a lot... it's pretty normal for them to talk trash about who has the best one.. unfourtunately some morons take things too far and kill people over it. A little more info about Kwane. He came from a poor part of town and a single parent home. He overcame that to end up at Vanderbilt a school where you have to be academically sound to be allowed in. He had to work hard academically not just at football to get into the school. His goal was to make it to the NFL so that he could get his mother and brother out of the area and into a new house. A guy from a rough part of town tries to do things right and this happens. A memorial fund has been set up for him, and hopefully there will be enough donations to at least get the funeral paid for, for his family since he wasn't exactly rich. One last note, he apparnetly didn't even own his own car. A guy who doesn't own a car is shot over cars. RIP
