Move Takes Place Next Season Concerned over the Bowl Championship Series process, The Associated Press pulled its football poll from the BCS system used to select the national title game and the three other BCS bowls, The Boston Globe reported. Kevin Weiberg, the commissioner of the Big 12 and coordinator of the BCS, said he has received a letter from the AP indicating it wasn't comfortable being part of the process. The move takes place starting next season. The BCS is expected to react to this Tuesday. The eight teams selected for the four major bowls -- Orange, Rose, Sugar, and Fiesta -- are picked by the BCS, which uses a combination of the AP poll (voted on by writers and broadcasters), the ESPN/USA Today poll (coaches) and several computer rankings. Each segment receives a one-third weighting in picking the teams. link: I think this is somewhat significant. The AP Poll has been associated with determining the National Champion for over 60 years. I am glad that they have decided to take a stand against the crappy system known as the BCS.
wow. i'm with you manny. at first blush, i think this blows open the BCS. the idea was to prevent the crowning of two national champions. now it happens for sure. there will be the AP's national champ...and the BCS' national champ. even when they're the same team, it still carries with it a weird inconsistency.
Finally! The BCS has way to much money involved for the system to make the correct changes (playoffs) itself. Good for the AP, it needed to distance itself from such an broken system.
oh you mean like the Broken system that was in place BEFORE the BCS Say what you want. . . the BCS is MUCH BETTER Than the crap before it Rocket River alas . . i'm a playoff supporter
I didn't say anything about how it was before or compare the two so I don't get all the "caps" stuff. I was complaining about how it is now. I don't think there are going to be 2 National Champs, I'm more hoping that this causes the correct changes and then the AP will jump right back in.
The ESPN / Coaches Poll should pull out too. Then it's JUST the computer stuff and it will be scrapped with a quickness. The college president's need to freaking wake up and get a play off system together like damn near every other college sport including NCAA IIA football.
i know..but in theory this was supposed to get rid of that problem. in fact, now we've taken a step back. now we will have two entirely independent groups awarding national champions, with no correlation between the two...and we know that as soon as the season starts. so which one do you want to win??? BCS championship or AP??
From ESPN I don't know that I like this idea any better than the BCS, but it seems likely that this is what they'll do absent the AP poll. I can't see a valid system that doesn't include both human polls.
1. both 2. BCS 3. AP It's not really a step back, more of a step sideways. Not much different from the AP-UPI days. Last year it would have worked perfectly if not for the computer polls - the human polls alone would have set up LSU vs. USC for the national title and everything would have been wrapped up nicely, like it was the previous year w/OSU v Miami. The 3 undefeateds though is a problem, and a consequence of the fact that, in a stupid attempt to "tweak" the BCS formula due to some perceived injustice, they took out SOS as an indpendent modifier and quality win points, thus undercutting the incentive to schedule big non-conf games (see Auburn) and making 3 plus undefeateds more likely.
i agree, sam. not sure it's a REAL step backwards. just a perception of chaos, perhaps. that's how i see it, anyway. two entirely different bodies with no connection awarding national championships...and everyone knows that from day one. and you're right..not much different from AP-UPI days...but that's really my point...isn't that what we were told they were trying to get away from. apparently they haven't. decide it on the field.
