This team has been doing soo well recently. Everything is going right for them, is this a good sign for next year?

I think the astros have some really good pitchers right now and next year hopefully they can make the playoffs. Im glad to see they are not tanking. [IMG]

You heard it here first! The Astros will win the NL Central next season in a runaway. But unless their young guns can put up the #'s in the playoffs it will all be a lost cause because we sure can't count on Bagwell and Biggio to put up the #'s when it counts.

I actually would not of mind tanking and coming in dead last so next year when we win the central again it will look like much more of an accomplishment.Has anyone ever won a division championship while being last the year before?

I'll you this, Quevedo should be thrown out of the league for giving up two home runs to BOGAR!

hahah. I was surprised to see Bogar hit 2 homeruns. It would of been sweet to see Ward hit another homer so 4 astros could of had 2 homeruns

    Ward 1 homer
    Bogar 2 homers
    Berkman 2 homers
    Hidalgo 2 homers

Houston really has a great young core and I think next year they will do something.

The young guns look great, but we still have to make some deals in the offseason to get more pitching. Hope we can finish in 3rd this year...that would be a great feat considering how this season began.

Third should be no problem for these "Slugging Stros" [IMG]

We need pitching, the middle relievers suck. With these blowouts, Dierker doesn't have to use them. The starters can stay in and give up a few runs.

Elarton just might win 20 games and possibly the Cy Young.

    He wants to use them.

This season is already in the toilet. The bright of this season is that the rookies have gotten a lot of exposure, and are really improving with this experience. Remember how bad some of the rookies, (like Lugo) were? How much better the young starters have gotten?

The only way the relief pitchers are going to get any better is to play. Better to have them blow some innings this year, and let them get better for next year. (Or, at least find the ones which aren't going to get better!)

Elarton had a 16-4 win loss ratio last time I checked. This guy really stepped up. Too bad Lima had such a bad start. We would probably at least be at 500 if he started off well.

    Worst to first

Twins went from worst to World champs.

Braves went worst to first in east.

Wagner and Lima easily accounted for 20 losses between them.

The astros need one more starter and one more hand in the pen. The young starters can work from the pen.

I say that we're not that damn far away . The offense is pretty much set -- we lead the league in HRs and are near the top in every other category (I remember how excited I was when Glen Davis hit 31HRs. Now we'll have two Stros hit 40!). Our road numbers are impressive (this past weekend in Wrigley for example), so I believe these kids are all damn good hitters and not just cashing in on Enron. Ship out Lima (to Detroit?) and Holt, re-sign Bulldog, and you have a rotation of Bulldog, Elarton, Reynolds, Miller, and Dotel. Not bad at all. Plus our damn closer will be back.

Also, I like how we're in third place in the division and there are more than a half-dozen teams fighting below us for the Worst Record in Baseball. Also relieved that, if we lose all the rest of our games, we still won't lose 100. That would've been abominable.

Hidalgo has hit 5 homers in the past 3 games, counting this one. Very impressive. It should have been 6 HRs though, if it weren't for that umpire screwing up. Grrrr.... [IMG]

BTW Hidalgo and Lugo have been named NL Co-Players of the Week.

I'm very encouraged about what this team can do next season.

If Hampton can't win the Cy Young by being on a division winner and going 22-4 with a 2.90 ERA there is no way that Elarton will win by going 20-5 (best case) with an ERA around 4.50 while pitching for a 3rd-6th place team. Johnson's numbers are similar to last years and Glavine will end up around 22-8 with a 3.50 ERA. I think you also have to throw Robb Nen into the Cy Young equation.

I know he has a snowballs chance in hell of winning the Cy Young. Just trying to look for the good in the pitching staff [IMG]

Their pitching problem is that they have a lot of good 5-6 inning pitchers. Elarton has been the only one to consistently give them quality innings (after a disappointing first month). Holt would be a very good long relief man but is too much of a head case to start. Before the season started an unnamed Astro was asked to speculate as to the kind of season Holt may have (after his outstanding preseason). The unnamed Astro's response was "All I know is he had better win his first start...". This implies (to me) that Holt is a head case. Lima pitches 5 great innings and 2 horrible ones (e.g. last night) most of the time. At least Miller looks promising. McKnight has pitched pretty well but has not had enough starts to make a definitive statement. My guess is that they will make a cursory effort to resign Hampton, shop Alou for a quality starter or settle for trading Ward (and others) for a number 3 or 4 guy (that is if they extend Bagwell's contract and get a definitive answer on whether or not they switch to the American League).

I hope we don't go to the American League. We can't even get National League pitchers out!!! How would this staff ever make it in the AL?

    Bobreck,
I think we need to put the rest any rumors of trading Alou. The guy is a freaking hitting machine. We need quality veterans on our teams and Alou has proven this year that he deserves to be a part of the Astro's future. I don't think someone like Bagwell is going to look positively on trading Alou. You can never have enough quality hitters.

I am fairly confident that Alou is not overpaid for a player of his caliber. I think we need to hold on to him. With the exception of last year and the exercise mishap. He has had 2 solid seasons with the Astros. After giving away Everett the last thing I want to do is trade away a proven outfielder. I am more comfortable with the idea of trading away Roger Cedeno. If the Stros can resign Bagwell than trade away Ward. I am sure we can get value for both of those two outfielders. I like having an outfield of Alou, Hidalgo, and Berkman.

The Astros need a quality starter and solid middle relief pitchers.

    Titan's fanatic!!!!

It was the first time the Titans sent an offense to the line of scrimmage with Eddie George in the backfield behind McNair to go with Wycheck at tight end and Carl Pickens, Kevin Dyson and Yancey Thigpen at wide receiver.

So many choices, with a full season still ahead.

"I think that might be scary for a defense," Dyson said.
