Sounds mostly like writer flinging mud at wall and seeing if anything sticks, but who knows...

Nets have big need for big man in middle

Published in the Asbury Park Press 12/19/04
    NETS NOTES

TORONTO -- The Nets' list of big men now consists of Jason Collins, Brian Scalabrine, little-used Jabari Smith and rookie Nenad Krstic.

"We still have work to do," Nets president Rod Thorn said.

But it won't be easy. Forwards and centers who can make an impact are hard to find and sign at this stage of the season. The Nets would love to acquire free agent Karl Malone, but he does not have any interest in the Nets -- even with Vince Carter -- according to a league source.

"Yeah, you can bring in somebody who's seven-foot," Richard Jefferson said. "But is he going to be able to play worth a damn?"

But the Nets do have two trade exceptions -- one worth $9.8 million and another worth $4.9 million
-- if they can find a partner to trade with. A trade exception allows a team to acquire another player or players without having to match salaries.

"We are researching every possibility," Nets GM Ed Stefanski said. "There's nothing immediate out there for us, but we're looking and hunting."

There are veterans the Nets could have an interest in, specifically Houston's Maurice Taylor, Golden State's Dale Davis and Toronto's Donyell Marshall.

Veteran centers Jelani McCoy and Jerome Moiso have also been released recently. But it is believed Moiso was originally offered by Toronto in the Vince Carter deal and the Nets turned it down.

Looking younger, Bulls big men Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry and Cleveland's DeSagana Diop have also been the subject of trade rumors all season. Washington center Kwame Brown, the No. 1 pick in the 2001 draft who has not lived up to expectations, has fallen out of favor with coach Eddie Jordan. But Brown is a restricted free agent after the season and the Nets interest in him isn't that great.

"It's legitimate," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said of the team's need for another big man. "We're probably going to have to continue to look at big people, but I'll leave that up to Ed and Rod."

But what could we get from the Nets? More importantly, what would we want to get from the Nets? Other than Kidd, Jefferson and Carter, do they have anybody who could help us? Do we need another trade exception? The only value in that would be on this BBS for people to spawn more ridiculous fantasy trades.

The thing is, nothing really. But I'd give them Mo or Juwan (hell, even throw in picks) just to give us flexibility. We have so much money tied up in PFs (around 40 mill over this year and next total), and we think we need to go get another. Getting out of one of those contracts would be nice.

ima2k- I guess when your starting PF is Brian Scalabrine, even Mo Taylor looks good!

At this point, I'd chip in a 2nd rounder with Mo to watch a TE expire.

It's too bad, but I don't think Houston (or Houston fans) appreciate Taylor's contributions to the team.

    What are the complaints:
    1. He does not rebound.
Neither does YM or the small forward, bring in a rebounder to play forward with YM or center with MT.

    2. His shot is off.
Players on this team, in general, are having problems finding their offensive rhythm -- not just Taylor. Part of the problem is the lack of consistent rebounding.

    3. He cannot defend the elite PF's.
That's what makes them "elite." Bring in a starting forward who can "contain" the elite forwards.

I have always been a supporter of Taylor's -- he brings inside toughness to an otherwise soft Houston interior (since Cato's departure), been the consummate professional, and one of the original YM defenders.

I have said it before and I will say it again: find another Taylor for your alterations.

Did you just say Mo brings "toughness" to our frontline?

If MoT is tough, there ain't no soft player in this league.

    35 Jason Collins F-C 7-0 255 12/02/1978
    28 Kaniel Dickens F 6-8 215 07/21/1978 I
    24 Richard Jefferson G-F 6-7 225
    5 Jason Kidd G 6-4 210 03/23/1973
    12 Nenad Krstic F-C 7-0 240 07/25/1983
    1 Ron Mercer* G-F 6-7 215
    10 Zoran Planinic* G-F 6-7 200
    21 Brian Scalabrine F 6-9 235 03/18/1978
    55 Jabari Smith* C 6-11 250 02/12/1977

Mo Taylor would have enough of a hard time bringing toughness to the Comets let alone this team.

Good find Nike. At this point I would give up MoT or Juon for their TE and a 2nd rounder or Planinic. Spoon can fill in the backup minutes w/o much of a dropoff.

Mo has his downside, but he has his good qualities as a player. I think that duplicating him at PF with Juwan Howard has made both players next to worthless; neither has confidence right now.

I can only hope that some other team would take one of them off our hands. But, even if we can make such a move, it better get us a little something in return. Saving money is one thing. Taking a bad situation and making it even worse (*cough* Eddie! *cough!!* KT! **COUGH** Posey!!) is a stamp of this team's mismanage---er, management.

Instead of MoT, I wonder if Howard would be appealing to NJ? If Toronto wants another draft pick & cap relief, I wonder if they'd consider this trade?

    Houston sends Howard to NJ.
Houston sends Nachbar/"05" lottery protected #1 pick to Toronto.

    NJ sends Scalabrine to Toronto.

Toronto sends Donyell Marshall to Houston.

"The small forward's" name is Jim Jackson and he averages about 5 rbs per game (down from over 6 last year) so I don't know how you can say he is a poor rebounder. That is great for a 6-6 small forward. Also, Yao's numbers, while not great for a man of his size, are respectable. He is in the top 25 in the league.

At least you didn't say Mo is the "second best" rebounder in the league, though.

didn't it said that their trade bait are their two trade exceptions? $9.8M and $4.9M, that's perfectly to trade for Taylor(9.8M) or Howard(4.9M). Taylor+Cash for a 2nd rd. pick + TE would be dream come true. we might have cap space to find a PF in the summer then?

Nike, you are Father Christmas. I know your secret.

    Thank you, Santa!

Mo T ? ....Buh, bye. Will we pay to unload him? You bet we will !!!

Merry X-mas, meadowlands. Meet your new running, gunning, forward to team with Jefferson and VC in coach Frank's high-octane running attack. Just give us that TE! No big deal!

You're going to LOVE this guy. Trust me. Oh come on. Just trust me. It's Christmas.

If the Nets are really serious about acquiring Motay, I do not see why anyone here will not jump on it. Motay wants to play more and he is over paid. He will fit in nicely as a net and we would cap much needed "un-clogging" and cap flexibility. He is supplus to requirement as far as I am concerned.
