Why are there 60 minutes in an hour rather than 10 or 100?

Because, a TV show named 100 minutes just doesn't have that good of a ring to it...

Three significant events (actually, four) that happened on November 11:

    1918 Armistice/Remebrance Day
1941 Opening of the Australian War Memorial
1975 Dismissal of the Wortham government (only time the Governor-General dismissed an electd government)
1993 Entombment of an Unknow Soldier from WWI in the War Memorial

    Smeg,

I'll guess that the third was D - Day, as in Decimal Day, when Australia converted from Imperial measurement to Decimal.

Here's my question. What is the origin of the Victory sign, when someone holds up their index and middle fingers in a V, palm pointing outwards?

I took that from a "Trivial Pursuit" card. Maybe they just meant "colored" spots.

    Smeg -

The only other event that happened on 11 November that I recall was that sometime in the 1800's, Ned Kelly was hanged at the opd Melbourne Gaol (but I think the opening of the Australian War Memorial and the entombment of the Unknown Soldier were more significant). Otherwise I give up!

I was pretty sure someone would've got this by now... isn't it something to do with radiation emissions?? 3600 per hour -which equals the number of seconds in an hour, I guess dividing it up to an even sort of number gives 60 (so that there is an equality)
As for what element the radiation comes from... I THINK it's caesium??

No...incorrect about the time thing. I didn't respond earlier to this, because the question doesn't look like trivia to me. It really has no answer when asked liked that.

How about: "Who chose 60 minutes in an hour, and why?"

It is 60 minutes because the Babylonians chose that number, and their cultural numbering system was base 60...segasimal or something like that, not decimal.

As I recall, they chose 360 days in the year and 360 degress in a circle as well. It is very arguable whether the number 60 has anything to do with time beyond that is how they always counted.

Concerning the fraction thing...base 60 is simply better for fractions that base 10 because 60 has 10 factors and 10 only has 2 (discounting 1 and the number). That is why the Babylonians loved base 60 so much. In fact, their numbers look like how we count time.

    2,30 equals 150.
just like 2:30 equals 150 minutes
