    This is getting ridiculous...

    http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1204/194223.html

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The police chief and the head of the city's schools apologized Monday to the mother of a 10-year-old girl who was arrested and handcuffed after she brought a pair of scissors to school in her backpack.

Although officers were following protocol when they drove the girl to a police station with her hands cuffed in front of her, discretion will be used in future cases involving young children, Police Chief Sylvester Johnson said.

Johnson said he told Rose Jackson that the arrest of her daughter, Porsche Brown, was "extremely unfortunate" and apologized for "any trauma that her daughter experienced" on her way to the station.

The district said Brown had violated a ban on bringing scissors - which are considered potential weapons - to school.

The girl's mother had voiced outrage at her daughter's arrest.

"My daughter cried and cried," Rose Jackson earlier told a Philadelphia newspaper. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh."

Police officers decided Thursday that the girl hadn't committed a crime, and let her go.

I saw this a while back; almost posted it but figured someone surely had and I just couldn't find the thread. Anyway, what RM95 said about zero tolerance. This is what it gets you. Kids are sensitive, especially little girls. I can't imagine getting cuffed and taken away in a police car. She has to have been really upset. How could they have gone through with it at that point?!?

Zero tolerance is the dumbest thing ever. We are gonna have kids in the pokey.

"Yo man what did they get you for"

"Drug Trafficing I took 4 asprin to school, you?"

"Weapons of Mass Destruction...I had a protractor with a sharp end"

Recycled bad joke warning: I thought those were Weapons of Math Instruction. :D

This is wrong on so many levels. Not only is it ridiculous, but it would be easy to frame another kid just to be mean. When I was in elementary school someone put one of those metal star things in my book. (supposedly you can throw them and they have sharp points) Apparently I could have gotten in a lot of trouble for having it; fortunately, no one saw it.

And, if you can't bring Advil to school, then I should have been locked away for a long time. I brought it to school. Every day. I even shared it with other people. Do you really want kids to have to go to the nurse every time they need something for a headache? (Not to mention that most high school girls would be in the nurse's office every month... Advil has some very important uses.)

Way to go, society... make kids bitter. Convince them that it's impossible to be good so you may as well be bad. Convince them that, when the popular music and movies encourage you not to trust the system or law enforcement, that they're right. :(

In other news a convicted burglar escaped custody while being transferred.

Nice to see we have our priorities straight.

I remember when scissors were a part of my elementary school supply list.

Amazing that there are some human beings out there that would hand-cuff a 10 year old girl. Amazing that ever since 9/11 and Columbine, the reason of many human beings has deteriorated.

Those officers that did that should be tortured in the playground like those Cops in "Men at Work"

    Isabel that was hilarious!:D

As for the girl.."a potential weapon"!?!? That's complete BS. I guarantee you about 99% of the things on earth are "potential weapons". I'm looking around and i think i could use just about everything in my dorm as a weapon! Poor kid.

Well I'm glad this troublemaker was taught a lesson. How come the mother didn't go to jail too? I mean she gave her child access to a weapon.

They should pass a federal law to mandate scissor locks so that the kids don't go on a rampage. Think of the children, before its too late.

full re-cycling for those with short memories

At New York's Kennedy airport the other day, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. "Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like "x"and "y" and refer to themselves as unknowns", but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. "As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared. When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.

"I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to disintegrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to nflict plane on every sphere of influence," the President said, adding: "Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."

President Bush warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex."

Attorney General Ashcroft said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."
