    Alrighty:

My son will finally be in Houston for Christmas after much litigation with the ex-wife and the judge threatening jail time. (we're doing much better, BTW. That seemed to really calm her down.)

They will typically drive him down every other month, at 11 hours a trip. That's 66 hours a year.

That said, I figured I'd get him something to pass the time during those trips.

    My ideas are:

    GameBoy Advance PS
    Gameboy DS
    Portable DVD player.

I can only afford one, so I'm asking what would be the best bet. Cost is not an issue, as I figure I'll spend $200 on all (just buy more stuff if one is cheaper.)

He's going to be 6 Dec. 23rd also, so this is a dual gift. He's getting other stuff, as well.

So what's the best bet for a 6 yr old boy?

Kids do not like Happy Christmas or Merry Birthday gifts. If you are going to spend $200 I would just break it up over both occasions.

He's 6, and I always bring him a gift when I go to see him.:p

When he was born, we immediately decided on a half birthday for him. But We're divorced now, so this is where I combine them.

The Gameboy DS is the newest and the one that probably his friends DON'T have yet which is always cool if you are 6.

agreed...I went with the GB Advace SP as it was on sale and a lot more in stock vs. DS...

Have a great time with your son...

My kids are coming up to Dallas for x-mas and I can't wait...I'll spoil them rotten and drop them off the day after x-mas...

Portable DVD player and when your babies mamma drives him down, send him a couple of kid movies for the drive a week before.

All of those seem a bit much for a 6yr old. Why don't you get him an awesome bicycle? Promote a healthy lifestyle and keep him outdoors instead of at home.

That is unless you are grooming him to be a mini-FattyFatBastid.

Kind of hard to ride a bike during a long drive from out of state.

Get the DS, he can play both types of GB games on it.

I'm leaning towards this, as well. What games did your nephew get for it? That's my largest concern. There aren't a lot of games on it yet, and they all looked a little mature for him.

Heck, what do I know? I was playing the seven in one pong dialer when I was his age, and I liked it!

Bikes work better when you aren't inside a vehicle. Crazy stuff, huh?

No kidding. Also, we've both wanted to get him a bike. He's not interested. He will be soon enough. He's an active kid.

(if you'd met me by now, you'd realize why.):)

Gotta suggest the DS myself... and you can go over to ign to check out the games they have for it.

So he rides along side the vehicle....what's the problem?? (trip may take a bit more than 11 hours though....).

Seriously...never met a kid who wasn't overjoyed at the newest electro gizmo. He'll love it. (and if it has annoying sound effects you can smile contentedly knowing step-dad's listening to them for the entire trip).

Congrats on the kid's visit. Merry Christmas.

I'd 86 the portable DVD idea. Game's are way cooler than movies.

Other than that, I difer to those who know anything about Gameboys.

Like someone mentioned, the DS will play Game Boy Advance games too.

Though it may be slightly difficult to find one....possible, though.

    Update:

I got him the Nintendo DS with the new Super Mario game. I bought it through ebay, due to EVERYONE being sold out until January, so I had to pay a premium. With shipping, it cost $250.77.

And just my cheapskate side: I watched these go today between 230 and 260. I put in my max bid, and that was the bid that popped up. I kept waiting for someone to outbid me because I thought I could get it for $10-20 cheaper. Quite the buyers remorse those last 4 minutes.

And then 10 minutes later, one rolls buy that I could have bought for $240. Dangit! I'm usually pretty good on low-balling people there.

Oh well, that's done. Thanks guys.
