I read this book on a long plane ride back in June... and it crushed me. I just finished watching the movie... and the emotions were pulled out of me again. If you have the opportunity, read the book and watch the movie. This may even be a book in which I would say watch the film first. The cinematography is beautiful, and Emily Watson's performance is breathtaking.
