Anthony Ippolito does a pretty good Sylvester Stallone. I'm curious. Hoping it's accurate and not overly complimentary, but apparently Stallone had no involvement in this and didn't know it was happening until it was underway. Will open in limited release on November 13th ahead of a wide release on November 20th to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original “Rocky,” which opened in cinemas on November 21st 1976.
I was interested until I learned Stallone was not involved and that they "dramatized" quite a bit. The actor looks to kill it as Rocky, at least.
Some dialogue: Sly: "I want to play 'Rocky'." Big Guy: "No!" Sly: "Yo...you gotta listen to what I'm sayin' here! I am Rocky you idiot!" Big Guy: "Nah...we're looking for a 'Raging Bull'-like De Niro character!" Sly: "One more time. Yo...I'm Rocko! I'm not going to give my script to you then!" Big Guy: "But, we had a deal on the script!" Sly: "Yo...I'm walking out the door!" Big Guy: "Come on back...let's talk some more!" Sly: "Like...I got to do this! It's the only way the movie works!" Big Guy: "Let me call somebody! Have a Coke!" Sly: "I don't want know ****ing Coke! I drink raw eggs! I'm Rocky!"
He's talking way too slowly, and his voice is too deep. His movements are robotic. Stallone/Rocky is more fluid, natural, and cool.
Part that bugged me from the trailer - when he says “I play Rocky”, one of the guys he’s pitching to says “I have no idea what that means”. Not only is that not something people said circa 1976 (and something people should immediately stop saying today if they still are), it’s NOT funny at all (and an attempt at humor would be the only reason for using it there) and DOESN’T MAKE SENSE as a response in that situation, unless you don’t speak English. Outside of that, looks pretty cool although I have no idea how you have the material to make something like that without any input from Stallone (maybe some detailed biography is out there about the story already?).
I’d like to see how he wrote Rocky and fought to play him (instead of Redford or other movie stars they wanted). But I’d also like to see a film on his 10-15 year behind-the-scenes battle with Schwarzenegger for action hero supremacy.
Trailer was good. I liked the Nike movie too. So this will work on me. In the movies we all love characters who grow during their epic journey and change, but in real life most people don’t change. It’s the world that changes because of the hero. And that what rocky gets right. It’s hits on the soul and spirit of a character and his city that few writers or filmmakers will ever hit.
