Right, which is why there are some distinctions drawn historically between being a member of the German military or command and being a member of the German military and also being a member of the Nazi Party. Historically speaking soldiers and even those in position of command in a military were largely apolitical and served for whomever was the political ruler of the state. Maybe we can ethically try to draw a line -- and in actual battle some lines have been drawn, but states have gone out of their way to prevent half the military from walking away when there is a regime change.
