Beltran will get in next year or the following at the latest. He was only 17 votes off this time.

While I think Altuve will eventually get in I feel like they will conveniently overlook / forget to hold the cheating scandal against Beltran while the younger stars from the team will continue to bear the brunt of the ire. Altuve and Correa being here long term probably more than Springer and Bregman. No matter how dumb I think that is.

George Springer’s Age 36 season gives me hope for Altuve’s. Altuve has done a good job at keeping himself physically fit. He hasn’t let himself go like a lot of older players have in the past… I’m thinking of Beltran on his last stop in Houston. Andrew Jones in Los Angeles. Etc.

    HOF?
I would say he is 60/40 sometime in first five seasons, and first ballot totally unlikely if he were to retire today,
That goes to 80/20 in first five, and 50/50 first ballot with two more average seasons and at least one more good playoff run.
That goes to 99/1 in first five and 80/20 (maybe 90/10) first ballot if he gets to 3000. (remember, it took Biggio until the third try, although he was only two votes off on the second)

He's a no-doubt HOF if his career ended today, I don't care how many voting cycles it takes.

How much do the voting muppets use the cheating scandal (which by all accounts he never participated in) against him? That's the only question.

And it is important to note, he isn't retiring today. Unless somebody says if they retired today, they are generally projecting out. As the best 2B of this generation, he absolutely should be.

If Altuve reaches, it's post 2029.

He needs the production and health. It could possibly become Biggio situation -- below average BA, chasing 3000. Craig had more defense to lean on. Altuve has DH and Yordan.

For a variety of reasons, Altuve's trajectory has fallen to the point where it is extremely unlikely that he gets 3000 during his current contract.

I think the best case scenario is that he gets to 2900.

Would you give him another contract for his age 40 season to continue working toward it?

Does Jim Crane give him another contract?

It depends on the team’s outlook at that point in time. If we suck and/or tanking, sure why not.

I have no interest in watching Altuve the part time DH. He deserves better.

I believe Altuve would play a bench role until he hits 3k, like Julio Franco.

I wonder if there is any value to adding a year to his contract now?

    Owed $30M, $10M, and $10M.

Maybe void current deal and add a 4th season at $10M or maybe even $6M

Lower AAV to $15M or $14M saving $11M or $10M per season for additional roster help.

Obviously each year he is another year older and that has additional problems but if they are going to give him another year anyway it would ge nice to have that money to add another player to help compensate for an older Altuve on the roster.

I'm such an Altuve stan. I want the team to do whatever to get him to 3000. But him being the good dude he is, I doubt he would let the team suffer in order for him to get that milestone. Unless the team was already suffering anyway because we had gone into tank mode.

I don’t think you can just void a contract like that and change the AAV related to the luxury tax. Could be wrong though.

You definitely can if the player agrees to it and the union does not think it is bad for future player contracts.

MLB would need to approve the deal but it is within the rules.

And I don't think adding guaranteed money be be disagreeable.

Uh there is the precedent from the union to oppose this straight up. You can add years and money but not at the cost of losing existing guaranteed money.

There is no loss of guaranteed money.

    This scenario adds guaranteed money.
