One last thing on Kenny, from a $$ perspective. Just trade JVG to TNT for Kenny, straight up. The salaries would off-set each other somewhat, and it would be kick as PR for both. Kenny wanted to coach, JVG wanted to yuk it up in the studio with Charles, so the Rocks and TNT just traded. Save everyone some $$. I am totally hot on this idea after writing about it.
Eeeek!!! The Horror! Actually, as an interim, Barkley might be worth it just for the entertainment value it would bring.
I heard that Phil Jackson had his "people" send his resume to a couple teams already, didn't mention which teams though. But Phil Jackson would be perfect. No matter what is said of him, he has 9 rings. Del Harris would be nice too. Already knows Yao's game and how to use him. But to tell you the truth, I don't care who it is, just as long as JVG isn't here.
Just a question: If JVG gets canned and then gets hired by TNT, do we still have to pay him? If Fratello takes the Memphis job, TNT will be looking for a replacement, coincidence? I think not.
How many million dollars would Les have to pay to buy out JVG's contract? Very unlikely. I think he is staying, for better or worse.
http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/sports/feigen/qa/index.html Van Gundy's style of coaching in question Question: If you were the general manager of Rockets, are you going to fire Jeff Van Gundy right now, or give him more chances to prove his coaching style which does not fit this team? Leon in Victoria, B.C. Answer: There is no coaching style that suggests the team not try hard. If Van Gundy's coaching style is to suggest that his players not bother to rebound, commit needless turnovers and get back slowly defensely, he should be fired. But the Rockets problems have nothing to do with style. As I wrote the other day, when they do the things every team must do they do them badly. Getting a team to do those things, however, is the coach's responsibility. Eventually, it does go to the coach. But I think that a proven coach, and probably any coach, deserves more than roughly 100 games. Usually, it's best for the coach's authority to be clear, something you lose when you dump the coach the first time the players play badly. Francis, Mobley undervalued Question: Do you think the Rockets overvalued Tracy McGrady and undervalued Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley? Could it be that the latter two meant more to the Rockets than they realized? Don in Richmond, Va. Answer: I think many people vastly undervalued Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley. Thinking back to the way they were criticized last season, especially with Steve Francis, we have a clear example of the Joni Mitchell doctrine: "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone." I think the Rockets knew, however, that they were taking a huge gamble. They considered the move worth doing because McGrady is that kind of rare player. He had proved that much in the league. If the deal does not work out now, it could be the right move long-term. It did, however, start rebuilding, rather than end it. Posted: Dec 1 2004 8:53AM | E-mail the writer
Phil Jackson is good, and he has 9 rings to back it up, guess it couldn't be all luck. But he asks for 10 million a year, which I would rather spend on Brand or some other strong PF. Get a smart no-name humble college coach, who knows the fundamentals and is willing to listen to his players.
Why everyone is so high on Donnie Nelson? How many of you actually know his coaching ability? If he is really good, don't you think he would have got offers long ago? The elder Nelson had to put the line in his contracts with the Warriors, then the Mavs, to make sure the younger Nelson get to coach after his retirement. I guess the father knows the Jr. won't get a job without his help! For those who want to hire an up-coming coach, just check the Doc Rivers' last season with TMac, it won't work. Let's get real here. Les will not fire JVG, and eat ~$5mil for more than two years; JVG will not quit since that will end his NBA coaching career. So, just quit dreaming, cheer for the Rockets. Oh, one good sign. The last time, when P. Jackson's name popped up as a replacement of JVG for the Knicks, the Knickers went on a winning streak! Now, Jackson's name comes up again, should we expect a winning streak now?
two of your candidates are now gone: Fratello and Musselman. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1936077
The anti-Gundy Paul Westhead Maybe not. We need a disciplined coach who will not let the players rule the roost but will demand hard work out of them and who will open up the offense. That sounds like Phil Jackson, I hate to say it. Larry Brown Pops P.J. Rudy T. These are the only championship winning coaches since Chuck Daly. And none of them are looking for a job. Would Chuck Daly come back? Something tells me probably not. So what's left? An assistant coach. Maybe someone off the staff of Sacramento? Or someone like Kevin O'Neil? How about................................Jerry Tarkanian? He's been running a professional team for many years and a champion at that.
