Free Rock Concert Gives LA Police Headache -- August 12, 2000 10:50 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Radical U.S. rock band Rage Against the Machine is planning a free open air concert on Monday across the street from the Democratic National Convention site, giving police an extra headache on Saturday as they juggled safety, security and free speech concerns.

The raucous four-piece band, whose latest album is called "Battle of Los Angeles," on Saturday began unloading its stage and sound-gear in the fenced-off protest zone outside the Staples Center. The Monday night concert was scheduled to take place as President Clinton addressed the convention and after a march uniting dozens of protest groups on the theme "Human Needs not Corporate Greed."

"We're gravely concerned because of security reasons -- juts the large number of individuals that this will bring out," said Los Angeles police spokesman David Kalish.

The band, whose latest album has sold 2 million copies, did not need a permit to perform in the area because a federal judge in July approved the area as an open demonstration site.

Rage Against the Machine is known for supporting numerous causes close to the hearts of thousands of activists expected to demonstrate in Los Angeles during the Monday-Thursday convention. These include the exploitation of workers, U.S. military policies and calls for the freedom of Black Panther activist Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is on death row for the 1981 killing of a Philadelphia police officer.

I think they live in Los Angeles.

Philidelphia was a pretty safe choice for a convention -- it's not exactly a hot bed of civil protest / disobedience. But, Los Angeles should make for a more interesting convention.
