It's such a tragic and horrifying story. At least most of the children were shot in their sleep, and never saw it coming, but the scene must have traumatized anyone who saw it, especially when most of the kids were shot in the head. The two told the Times that their son sounded despondent and had said through tears that he wanted to take his own life as he was inundated with “dark thoughts” as his wife sought a divorce. “I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. NO, the shooting at the WHCD is real. The problem is the same: the US has ease of access to guns, there is a lack of mental health resources, there are crazy and unstable people, and there is all the divisiveness. The difference is that, unlike 99% of the public, top-level officials have a security detail, and that is exactly what played out last night. The suspect was caught where he should have been caught and never breached security. That is how it is supposed to work when you have trained protection. The real comparison is between that outcome and the 8 kids who were recently gunned down in La. They had no security detail, no trained protection, nobody to step in. In a nation with this problem, high-level gov officials are relatively secure, but ordinary citizens are not, and that includes every child sitting in our schools.
