I asked my History teacher about this once, and the way she explained it to me was that it was an issue of party discipline.

The person in power (the President) will naturally have his detractors. And these detractors are "disciplined" by getting passed over for spots on commissions and stuff like that.

If a new person is in office every 4-8 years, then the detractors don't have to remain in political exile.

But if that person stays in office for 16 years, then those are 16 years that the detractor will be passed over for not showing solidarity or being a sheep.

Boycott the Spongebob Squarepants movie because Alec Baldwin has a role in it?

I doubt the majority of the viewing public that is watching Spongebob did a lot of voting in the last election, nor will they vote in the next. Extremism run amok.

This seems to be along the lines of what would scare me about it. Yes, if the majority of America wanted to vote for Bush again in 2008, you could ask yourself what the problem with that would be.

As I see it though, the average American only understands politics and power to the degree they are portrayed in the movies. Myself included, I have no idea how much more and more and more power a president and his "group" would be getting month after month after month just by maintaining his position. Perhaps on the exterior, the biggest impact on my day-to-day life would be changes in tax code or issues with Iraq, but there could be minor changes being made that would eventually push the country way too far to an extreme.

If the majority of Americans like that extreme, you could question what the problem is, but when a majority means a difference of a couple of million votes, well, that extreme scares me.

I think presidential term limits are a good thing. If soo many people like GWB, there is no reason the Republican party can't put up a spitting image of him to run next - a vice president, or one of his daughters maybe :p

you cant really say that, look at last month's election totals, versus clinton's peak year for votes. In 1996 when clinton beat dole he got 45,238,951. this election bush pulled off 60,645,844. by those numbers it looks like bush would put a good texas a-whoopin on the arkansas boy. now there are many swing voters and other things that would have to be taken in to account, but how can you say he would beat him that badly??

And Kerry got 57,288,974 votes. This election year had good turnout and both candidates received record numbers of votes. You can't pull Clinton's vote numbers out of historical context and compare them to Bush's or Kerry's numbers. Such a comparison is meaningless.

does the fact that bush pulled more votes in 2000 than clinton did in 96 help any? gore pulled more in 2000 than clinton did in 96. i liken these comparisons to that of hakeem vs chamberlin, russell, and the rest.

No it doesn't. Context counts for a lot. Instead of the raw numbers, why don't you lean on voter turnout data and percentage of overall vote? That will help you prove your point much more effectively than trying to build an argument on the overall numbers.

Notice how bigtexx leans on percentage of popular vote to support the point. That is a better route than the raw numbers you have tried to use.

Still, if you want to debunk andymoon, you gotta debunk the idea that Clinton would have run a better campaign than Kerry. As close as this last vote was (51%-48%), Clinton wouldn't have needed to have been that much better than Kerry to pull off the victory.

    looking at it percentage wise:

in 1996 - 49% of the eligible population turned out, clinton took 50% of the popular vote.

in 2000 - 51% of the eligible pop turned out, and gore took the popular vote with 48%

in 2004 - i couldnt find the eligible turn out, but i think i heard it was somewhere around 60??? bush took 52%.

bush still wins. would clinton beat this bush like he beat his father?? its possible, but would it be a beating? probably not.
