Well, that sucked, were scoring at an unsustainable clip, I can only hope as our bats cool our pitching gets better. Coulda, woulda, shoulda been a Hunter B win but now were 6-5 and 1-3 on the road and we get Seattle this weekend who are 4th in the league in pitching Basically, were a .500 team for now, but I do "expect" us to win today and tomorrow........fingers crossed, we have to take advantage of the offense while there still hot. The blast by Cam last night was EPIC
If this offense hit Mariners pitching, then they are the real deal. I can already see cal fixing himself against the Astros.
We have had bats early on, but no pitching. Kool-aid, no sugar. Peanut butter, no jelly. Ham, no burger.
No he does not need to be skipped, but Japan typically 5 days between starts, rather than 4, for a starting rotation. It's just good practice to keep him on that schedule this early in the season, especially with Brown injured and the general risk of injury in 2026.
I have no idea how he will fare against the 'stros, but I think the chances of Cal ever sniffing a season like he had last year ever again are very very low...like Brady Anderson low.
All of Weiss' runs that inning came from a group of 9 consecutive PAs. The 2nd was an out. The 3rd, 4th, and 7th should have been outside ending the inning with minimal damage, and a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately this is Colorado Also, unfortunately, the Astros have heen terribly unlucky getting outs on batted balls. Yainer misses a popup and 6 additional runs score Jake loses a fly ball in the sun costing 3 runs Pena flinches right instead and can't get an easy groundball to his left that would end the inning- 8 runs score. The ball hits the base when Pena was ready to field it and end the inning- 5 additional runs score. Astros are 6-5 and absolutely should have won 2 if not all 3 of those. This all boils down to the Hunter Brown injury and Javier and McCullers not able to pitch 5+ innings. Espada felt like he had to try and get an additional inning out of Bolton because the bullpen is already gassed. Espada nationalized that Weiss was getting unlucky and should get the next hitter out over and over because bringing in another reliever do soon screws tomorrow also. And most important - the pitchers are not executing and picking up the defense after those tough breaks. Mental toughness. The luck is going to turn around but they simply must start getting 5+ innings regularly from the starters for that to be enough to save the season. Only 5 of 11 starts have been 5+ innings and only 2 have been 6+
McCullers could be leading the Astros in innings pitched, and people would still whine about his innings.
To be clear I love Lance and wish and hope he has a bounce back year and can stay healthy. For him as a deserving person as well as for me as a fan. My comment had nothing to do with that. Even at his best, Lance was always a risk to throw 100 pitches in 4 1/3 innings in any start. My comment was strictly about a need for 5+ innings consistently from the starters and that simply isn't Lance's ( or Cristian's) strong point.
Of course. And he could end up leading the team in IP by the time the season ends as well. I can't imagine he has 150 innings in his holster but I could be wrong. But even if he does it will be well into the season before Espada won't be half expecting to come get him in the 5th inning. Not hating, just being realistic based on history.
How LMJ does the rest of the season does not affect the bullpen's use prior to yesterday. How LMJ does the rest of the season does not affect the bullpen's use prior to yesterday. LMJ isn't scheduled to pitch again until at least Friday, so future performance or fear of future performance does not affect bullpen usage yesterday. As such, calling the current team leader in innings pitched as a Top 3 reason the bullpen is gassed is hating as it is based on bias instead of actual performance. Nick Allen missing a routine grounder in LMJ's last start is likely more at fault for bullpen being gassed than LMJ. Meyers losing a fly ball in the lights more so. Several bullpen pitchers not even able to go 1 full inning are more to blame. Burrows is probably the only starter less responsible for the current state of the bullpen, as he's gone at least 5 in every start.
And he went 4 innings two days ago which directly hurt the current rest level of the bullpen. Actually more than Javier who went 3 2/3 innings 4 days ago. So essentially, going into yesterday's game Lance was more respondible for the negative condition of the bullpen than any other starter because his short start was the most recent.
