I'm not sure what my favorite is but lately I've been buying Clint's Texas Salsa "medium". The hot is okay but I think the medium has more flavor. Another one I like is Hell on the Red hot. The other night I decided to try something different and I found a bottle of salsa I've never seen before, Voodoo Bayou made in Louisiana. They had three flavors although I can only think of two, Cilantro and Jalapeno. I got the cilantro and it was the nastiest salsa I've ever had. It tasted like a spicy pizza sauce and pizza sauce does not taste good on tortilla chips. So what's your favorite?
Hell On The Red. In fact, I just reloaded today. I don't like my salso too chunky, so it has the prefect consistancy. It's also a perfect blend of spiciness and sweetness. It's hot, but not so hot that you miss the more subtle flavors.
I know it's not from a jar...but I just had a ton of salsa and chips at Johnny Tamales on NASA Road 1 at lunch...good stuff. I also like Gringos salsa. But my favorite has to be Tortillas in La Porte.
I tried some of this stuff last weekend. NASTY. I had the garlic flavor and it was so bad I switched to some Pace that a friend left in my fridge.
For store-bought, I still haven't found anything better than Pace Picante Sauce - medium. -- droxford
Blue Agave had the best restaurant salsa in the world. It wasn't hot, at all, but was so addicting that it must have been laced with opium, or something. Since they went out of business , I have had a hard time finding opium, which helped initiallywith the withdrawals.
in a blender: -fresh tomatos -fresh white onion -fresh jalapenos -fresh cilantro -kosher salt or sea salt -juice of 1/2 of a lime -1-2 turns of a peppergrinder (black peppercorns) -pinch of cumin (comino) blend (don't puree) let rest for 15 minutes before serving enjoy.
I love all of the salsa's I've tried so far bought online from the Austin Spice company. They've won all kinds of awards for their recipes.
Thanks. I'll have to try that one. (except maybe add some red chile flakes or something to give it an added southwestern flavor... that's what I usually do - take established salsa kits or recipes and mess with them until I like the flavor.) As for bottled stuff - the Zuni green tomatillo one is pretty good. (Central Market) Some general geographic tips: Good salsa comes from: San Antonio (except Clint's; too mild) West Texas Mexico South Texas New Mexico (except Santa Fe) Bad salsa, IMO, comes from: California Santa Fe Austin <----- (exception - Central Market)
Use some dried peppers too, or pan fry the jalapeƱos until black on one side before you use them. Other than that, this is the recipe I use too and it RULES even almost any restaurant. Mrs. Renfros' Green Sauce is good store bought sauce.
Whenever im in Houston I always make sure to stop buy a nice HEB and load up on salsa. Them and whole foods has the best selection i have ever seen. These two are probably my favorites: La Fogata zuni grill - green (the red sucks) And yeah that Voodoo Bayou stuff is horrible. I should have known better that buy a salsa that comes in a BBQ sauce bottle and is made in LA.
